Architectures, apparatuses, methods, systems, and techniques for controlling electrical power distribution network are disclosed. Embodiment distributed, hierarchical controls including layered locational energy service control variables may be utilized to determine and control the provision of energy services, including real power, reactive power (VAR), and capacity reserves, by DERs in a distribution network. In a first ex-ante iteration a simulation may be performed to calculate a set of subnetwork-specific control variables based on subnetwork locational energy service prices and a plurality of sets of DER-specific control variables based on DER locational energy service prices. A second ex-ante iteration calculates a set of actual subnetwork-specific control variables based on subnetwork locational energy service prices and a plurality of sets of actual DER specific control variables based on DER locational energy service prices. Provision of energy services by DERs in a distribution network occurs in response to the determined control variables.

Control architectures for power distribution networks with distributed energy resources

Systems and methods for fault detection and protection in electric power systems that evaluates electromagnetic transients caused by faults. A fault can be detected using sampled data from a first monitored point in the power system. Detection of fault transients and associated characteristics, including transient direction, can also be extracted through evaluation of sample data from other monitored points in the power system. A monitoring device can evaluate whether to trip a switching device in response to the detection of the fault and based on confirmation of an indication of detection of fault transients at the other monitored points of the power system. The determination of whether to trip or activate the switching device can also be based on other factors, including the timing of receipt of an indication of the detection of the fault transients and/or an evaluation of the characteristics of the detected transients.

One exemplary embodiment is a power distribution system including a distributed energy resource (DER), a DER controller, and a central controller. The DER interface controller includes a DER controller interface configured to communicate with the DER controller using a DER controller native format, an external device interface configured to communicate with the central controller using one of a plurality of communication protocols, a registration circuitry configured to transmit a registration request to the central controller, and a mapping circuitry. The central controller is configured to receive the registration request, and update a DER registry in response receiving the registration request. The mapping circuitry is configured to receive input defining power distribution characteristics in response to the central controller updating the DER registry.

A building may include several emergency lighting stations in which at least some, if not all, of the lighting station includes a lighting device, a motion sensor, a speaker, a video camera, and a wireless access point. A controller adapter may provide power to and communicate with the lighting stations via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) connections. A central controller may communicate with the controller adapter to control the emergency lighting stations through the PoE connections.

Consequences of a malicious action are prevented or mitigated using a validation approach that either blocks the command or ensures a negligible effect on system operation. An example method, suitable for implementation in a monitoring device in an electric power substation, includes receiving a command to open or close a circuit breaker. In response, one or more state parameters for the electric power network that comprises the substation are then predicted, the predicted state parameters reflecting an operating state for the network under the assumption that the received command is executed. The method further comprises comparing the predicted one or more state parameters to corresponding operational limits. Execution of the command is then blocked, in response to determining that one or more of the predicted state parameters violate the corresponding operational limits.

A power distribution system for off-shore natural resource platforms includes an off-shore medium voltage direct current (MVDC) power bus. Each power bus segment may also be electrically coupled to an off-shore renewable energy source, such as a wind farm, and/or an off-shore drilling platform. The off-shore drilling platforms may include local power distribution systems electrically connected to a corresponding power bus segment via a circuit breaker to receive power from the MVDC power bus and supply power to local equipment of the off-shore drilling platform.

A simulation is run for the power restoration logic and then the power restoration logic is transmitted to a power restoration controller which thereafter monitors and controls the intelligent electronic devices.

A microgrid includes a plurality of distributed energy resources such as controllable distributed electric generators and electrical energy storage devices. A method of controlling operation of the microgrid includes periodically updating a distributed energy resource schedule for the microgrid that includes on/off status of the controllable distributed electric generators and charging/discharging status and rate of the electrical energy storage devices and which satisfies a first control objective for a defined time window, based at least in part on a renewable energy generation and load forecast for the microgrid. The method further includes periodically determining power set points for the controllable distributed energy resources which satisfy a second control objective for a present time interval within the defined time window, the second control objective being a function of at least the distributed energy resource schedule for the microgrid.
