A superconducting magnet system having two-stage quenching. A primary coil assembly includes a coil section configured to be superconducting when conducting current below a first critical current. An EMI shielding coil assembly includes a coil section configured to be superconducting when conducting current below a second critical current, which is electrically coupled to a variable resistor configured to be superconducting when conducting current below a third critical current and to be non-superconducting when conducting current at or above the third critical current that is less than both the first and second critical currents. Generating a magnetic flux within the EMI shielding coil assembly causes the current conducted through the variable resistor to exceed the third critical current, quenching the variable resistor and generating heat. The EMI shielding coil assembly is disposed such that the heat from the variable resistor quenches the primary coil assembly.

The present invention relates to a magnetic field adjustment system for use in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and a respective method. The magnetic field adjustment system comprises a first magnetic field generating assembly and an additional assembly. Wherein the first magnetic field generating assembly is used for generating a first magnetic field required by the MRI; and the additional assembly, including a switch and a current branch line, is used for cooperating with the first magnetic field generating assembly to generate a second magnetic field required by the MRI.

Multifunctional superconducting coil providing electromagnetic interference shielding and shimming for magnetic resonance imaging system

A system for energizing a main coil of superconducting magnet in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system includes a cryostat comprising a housing. A first coil is positioned within the housing of the cryostat. Alternatively, the first coil may be positioned external to the housing of the cryostat. A second coil is coupled to the first coil and positioned external to the housing of the cryostat. The second coil is configured to inductively couple to the main coil. A controller is coupled to the first coil and the second coil and is configured to control the first coil and the second coil to induce current in the main coil.

System and method for energizing a superconducting magnet

A method of shimming a superconducting magnet assembly that includes a cryostat and a superconducting magnet configured to be installed in the cryostat. The method includes determining a plurality of field inhomogeneity characteristics of the superconducting magnet while the superconducting magnet is at room temperature and prior to the superconducting magnet being sealed in the cryostat, and installing an initial set of passive shims inside the cryostat while the superconducting magnet is at room temperature, the initial set of passive shims reducing the determined field inhomogeneity characteristics when the superconducting magnet is operating at a normal operational temperature.

A system and method for modeling gradient coil operation induced magnetic field drift include a computer programmed to acquire a pulse sequence to be applied during an MR scan and determine a power spectrum of a plurality of gradient pulses of the pulse sequence. The computer is also programmed to calculate a drift of the magnetic field attributable to application of the plurality of gradient pulses by the plurality of gradient coils during application of the pulse sequence and apply the pulse sequence during the MR scan. The computer is further programmed to acquire MR data based on application of the pulse sequence, correct the acquired MR data based on the calculated drift of the magnetic field, and reconstruct an image based on the corrected MR data.
