Concepts and technologies are described herein for cross-platform application programming interfaces for applications. In accordance with the concepts and technologies disclosed herein, the cross-platform APIs support interoperability and extensibility with various application programs using a single language and/or set of APIs. Extensions authored for a particular application program may be used with other application programs that expose the same or a similar set of APIs, even if other object models or APIs associated with the application programs differ from one another. Thus, the APIs support cross-platform, cross-device, and cross-version compatibility of extensions.

Cross-platform application programming interfaces for applications

A set of protocols support a common script object model for document interaction that crosses document types and runtime environments. A cross frame browser-based protocol may provide a secure, scalable, and asynchronous mechanism for transmitting script object model requests to document hosts and managing responses to developer code in standards-compliant browsers. A hostable runtime Application Programming Interface (API) may provide a secure, scalable, and asynchronous protocol to transmit script object model requests across process boundaries to document hosts back to developer code with minimum performance impact on the document host.

Document communication runtime interfaces

Data processing architecture where submitters can write data and/or metadata changes to a destination through an asynchronous interface. The architecture includes a ticketing system that issues a ticket (a unique identifier) to the submitter in response to receiving a changelist from the submitter. When the changes are successfully completed at the destination, the cached destination data can be re-downloaded to the submitter, and the changes cached in the submitter, discarded. Absent this capability, a user has to manually manage the cached changes and cached data. The architecture can be distributed in that multiple submitters can submit changelists. The destination provides data integrity by managing submissions to assist in ensuring data integrity across multiple submissions. Automatic changelist cleanup is provided on the submitter so that changelists do not impact performance, memory, and storage.

Maintaining client data integrity in a distributed environment using asynchronous data submission

Persistent annotations are created on a scorecard that combines multi-dimensional as well as fixed value data. The annotations uniquely defined by the scorecard view definition and by the retrieved scorecard data, are independent of the data's dimensionality enabling persistence of the annotations with the data and definition even when the scorecard is reconfigured. The annotations may include a 'bubble-up' feature, where a hierarchical structure of the scorecard is inherited by the annotations. Threaded discussions and updated document lists are enabled around the annotations with appropriate permissions and/or credentials.

Multidimensional metrics-based annotation

Sharable extended cell information is used by multidimensional data models to enable cell annotations and line item details. Annotations are notes stored with a cell in a multidimensional dataset. Line item details permit levels of numeric detail below the lowest dimensional granularity. When receiving a multidimensional dataset in response to a query, a client application receives indicator information at the cell level, indicating to the client application that extended cell information is retrievable.

Embodiments are provided to use metadata to provide readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional space. In an embodiment, metadata can be used to define readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional data store. The various embodiments also use relational and/or multi-dimensional representations to resolve and validate readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional space. Metadata can also be used to designate a number of writeable and/or readable regions of a relational and/or multi-dimensional representation.

Efficient data handling representations

Embodiments are provided to use metadata to provide readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional space. In an embodiment, metadata can be used to define readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional data store. The various embodiments also use relational and/or multi-dimensional representations to resolve and validate readable and/or writeable regions of a multi-dimensional space. Metadata can also be used to in conjunction with writeback operations.

Handling multi-dimensional data including writeback data

The subject invention provides a system and/or method that facilitates prescribing a navigation within an application utilizing a topology and a navigation path. The topology is created based upon received metadata and is a network of node objects and link objects. The navigation path is a sequential list over the topology that represents a sub-graph thereof. A prescribing component can create the topology and navigation path such that a prescribed navigation can be utilized by an application during navigation (e.g., exploration) during runtime.
