Acrolein is a useful additive for treating hydrocarbon fluids, such as crude oil, for multiple purposes including, but not necessarily limited to, reducing or preventing microbial activity, scavenging hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and/or at least partially dissolving iron sulfide (FeS). Acrolein can be stabilized against decomposition by mixing or combining it with at least one alkyl carbonate, which can also raise the flash point of the stabilized acrolein composition.

Shelf-stabilized HS scavengers and methods for preparing such shelf-stabilized HS scavengers. In one aspect, a stabilized hydrogen sulfide scavenger configured for storage at an elevated temperature includes a base scavenger, free formaldehyde, and a stabilizing alcohol. In another aspect, a method of preparing the stabilized hydrogen sulfide scavenger includes the steps of providing a quantity of base scavenger; providing a quantity of free formaldehyde; and adding a quantity of stabilizing alcohol, wherein the quantity of stabilizing alcohol is determined as a function of the provided quantity of free formaldehyde. In yet another aspect, the stabilized scavenger includes about 25 wt. % base scavenger, wherein the base scavenger is an amine-aldehyde condensate; about 15 wt. % free formaldehyde; and between about 10 wt. % and about 25 wt. % stabilizing alcohol.

Stabilizing scavenger formulations in the presence of excess formaldehyde for storage at elevated temperatures

A combination of at least one basic compound, such as potassium hydroxide, together with at least one aldehyde donor can synergistically scavenge mercaptans from organic fluids, such as hydrocarbons, where 'synergistically effective' is defined as the amount of mercaptans scavenged is greater as compared with a combination where either the basic compound or the reaction product is absent, used in the same total amount.

Metals, such as mercury, may be removed from aqueous, hydrocarbon, or mixed oilfield or refinery fluids by: applying a sulfur compound having the general formula HS&#x2014;X, where X is a heteroatom substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, and/or alkylaryl group either alone or in combination with or as a blend with at least one demulsifier, a buffering agent, a pour point depressant, and/or a water clarifier to chelate the at least one metal and form a chelate complex of the sulfur compound with the at least one metal and then separating the chelate complex from the fluid.

Metal removal from fluids

Metals, such as mercury, may be removed from glycol fluids by applying a sulfur compound having the general formula HS&#x2014;X, wherein X is a heteroatom-substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, and/or alkylaryl group either alone or in combination with or as a blend with at least one antifoam additive, at least one demulsifier and/or a buffering agent, to chelate the at least one metal and form a chelate complex of the sulfur compound with the at least one metal and then separating the chelate complex from the fluid.

Metal removal from glycol fluids

A method of preventing or mitigating corrosion on a metallic surface exposed to a supercritical fluid is disclosed. The method includes adding a corrosion inhibitor composition to a supercritical fluid comprising a supercritical carbon dioxide; and contacting the supercritical fluid with a metallic surface, wherein the corrosion inhibitor composition comprises a corrosion inhibitor that has a solubility of greater than 5,000 ppm in the supercritical fluid at 48.9&#xb0; C. and 2,200 psi.

Pitting corrosion of stainless steel occurs in solutions of organic acid, such as tartaric acid, in an electrolyte solution with methanol. However, methanolic solutions containing at least one organic halide and at least one organic hydroxyl-acid and some water provide reduced pitting corrosion of stainless steel. The organic hydroxyacid may be a hydroxy acid containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms with at least one hydroxyl group and at least one carboxylic acid group, in a non-limiting example, glycolic acid. The pH of the methanolic solution may range from about 3.5 to about 8.

Chemical inhibition of pitting corrosion in methanolic solutions containing an organic halide

Corrosion to a metal surface in contact with corrosion forming components within an aqueous-based fluid system may be decreased, prevented, and/or inhibited by contacting the metal surface(s) with apatite forming components and forming at least one apatite species on the surface with the apatite forming components. The apatite forming components may be or include phosphates, organophosphates and combinations thereof. In a non-limiting embodiment, the apatite forming components may further include fluorides, chlorides, calcium, and combinations thereof.

Decreasing corrosion on metal surfaces with apatite forming components

Pitting corrosion of stainless steel occurs in solutions of organic acid, such as tartaric acid, in an electrolyte solution with methanol. However, methanolic solutions containing at least one organic halide and at least one organic hydroxyacid and some water provide reduced pitting corrosion of stainless steel. The organic hydroxyacid may be a hydroxy acid containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms with at least one hydroxyl group and at least one carboxylic acid group, in a non-limiting example, glycolic acid. The pH of the methanolic solution may range from about 3.5 to about 8.

A method of manufacturing an electrical conductor includes providing a substrate layer, depositing a surface layer on the substrate layer that has pores at least partially exposing the substrate layer, and forming graphene deposits in the pores. Optionally, the graphene deposits may be formed only in the pores. The graphene deposits may be formed along the exposed portions of the substrate layer. The graphene layers may be selectively deposited or may be deposited to cover an entire layer. Optionally, the forming of the graphene deposits may include processing the electrical conductor using a chemical vapor deposition process using an organic compound precursor and heat of sufficient temperature to facilitate graphene growth on the metal compound comprising the substrate layer.

Electrical conductors and methods of manufacturing electrical conductors

An electrical connector has a carbon nanotube (CNT) conductor, a terminal terminated to the CNT conductor, and a conductive intermediary electrically coupled to the CNT conductor and the terminal to enhance an electrical connection between the CNT conductor and the terminal. Optionally, the terminal may have a crimp barrel that receives the CNT conductor. The electrical connector may include a second CNT conductor where the terminal splices the CNT conductor and the second CNT conductor together.

Termination of carbon nanotube macrostructures

A method of manufacturing an electrical conductor includes providing a substrate layer, depositing a graphene layer on the substrate layer and selectively depositing boundary cappings on defects of the graphene layer to inhibit corrosion of the substrate layer at the defects. Optionally, the boundary cappings may include nano-sized crystals deposited only at the defects. The selectively depositing may include electrodepositing boundary cappings on exposed portions of the substrate layer at the defects. The selectively depositing may include reacting boundary capping material with exposed portions of the substrate layer at the defects to deposit the boundary cappings only at the defects.
