A method of sealing a coolant control valve of a cooling system for a power device which generates heat as a by-product of operation. The cooling system includes a pump, a heat exchanger, and coolant. The valve includes: an internal channel in fluid communication with the exchanger; a sealing package in contact a surface of the coolant control valve and bounding a portion of the cooling system and the channel; and a rotary element in the channel and rotatable to open and close the valve. The portion is bounded in part by the valve and the sealing package. The method includes: starting-up the device; creating a pressure differential of at least 0.2 bar between the coolant in the portion of the cooling system, and the coolant in the internal channel; rotating, using a motor, the rotary element; opening the valve; and pumping, using the pump, the coolant through the internal channel.

Method of seating a valve seal

Rotary valve assemblies are disclosed, for example, for use in a thermal management system. The assembly may include a first rotary valve including a primary shaft including a hollow portion defining a first inner cavity and a first spline piece disposed within the first inner cavity on one end and including a primary spline feature on an opposite end, the primary spline feature having one or more primary splines. A second rotary valve may include a secondary shaft including a hollow portion defining a second inner cavity and a second spline piece disposed within the second inner cavity and including a secondary spline feature having one or more secondary splines. One or both of the first spline piece and the second spline piece may be formed of metal. The primary splines and the secondary splines may be configured to mesh together to form a spline joint between the rotary valves.

An engine valve actuation system comprises a camshaft, with at least one cam; a control shaft one; a control shaft two; and at least one valve actuation unit, each valve actuation unit further comprising: (i) at least one set of an engine valve and an engine-valve return spring; (ii) an lost-motion module, further comprising a collapsible high-pressure chamber, and operably converting the profile of at least one cam and the collapsing motion from the high-pressure chamber to corresponding movement of the at least one engine valve; and (iii) a hydraulic circuit, further comprising a trigger valve one and a trigger valve two, the two trigger valve being controlled respectively by the control shaft one and the control shaft two.

Engine valve actuation system

The present invention discloses an actuator, which is a combination of a hydraulic control unit and a spring-mass mechanical unit, comprising: a housing, with upper and lower ports; an actuation cylinder in the housing; an actuation piston in the actuation cylinder moveable along the longitudinal axis; a first fluid space; a second fluid space; a first piston rod connected to a first surface of the actuation piston; the second piston rod connected to a second surface of the actuation piston; a fluid bypass; a first spring system connected to the first piston rod, biasing the actuation piston in the second direction; a second spring system biasing the actuation piston in the first direction; a first flow mechanism; a second flow mechanism. The present invention also discloses two other preferred embodiments. The actuator features variable valve lift, low energy consumption, fast dynamic response, soft seating and easy controllability.

Variable valve actuator

Crossover valve systems and corresponding methods offer an effective means to overcome large opening pressure force, or provide reasonable gas flow area, or both. In an exemplary embodiment, a crossover valve system for a split-cycle engine having a power cylinder and a crossover passage comprises first and second crossover valves, each valve opening outwardly away from the power cylinder and providing fluid communication between the power cylinder and the crossover passage, with the diameter of the second crossover valve being larger than the diameter of the first crossover valve; and an actuation mechanism operative to open the first crossover valve, then the second crossover valve after a predetermined delay to allow a certain rise in the pressure inside the power cylinder, resulting in much smaller differential pressure forces across the crossover valves, larger flow areas, or both.

Actuators, and corresponding methods and systems for controlling such actuators, provide independent valve control with a large initial or opening force. In an exemplary embodiment, an actuator includes a driver further including a housing defining a longitudinal axis and first and second directions, an actuation mechanism capable of generating actuation force at least in the first direction, and a rod with one end operably connected with at least one part of the actuation mechanism and with the other end available for an operable connection with a load such as an engine valve; at least one return spring operably connected with the rod through a spring retainer assembly and biasing the rod in the second direction; and a pneumatic booster further including a pneumatic cylinder, a pneumatic piston operably connected with the rod through the spring retainer assembly and biasing the rod in the first direction, a charge mechanism providing a controlled fluid communication between the pneumatic cylinder and a high-pressure gas source, and a bleed mechanism providing a controlled fluid communication between the pneumatic cylinder to a low-pressure gas sink.

An expansion valve for an air conditioning system circulates refrigerant through a fixed-displacement compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator. An inlet is provided for receiving refrigerant liquefied in the condenser. An outlet of the expansion valve supplies refrigerant to the evaporator. A valve element controls flow of refrigerant between the inlet and the outlet, wherein the valve element is normally closed. A control assembly is coupled to the valve element and is responsive to at least one temperature or pressure in the air conditioning system to open the valve element to variably meter the refrigerant to the evaporator. A bleed passage bypasses the valve element to conduct refrigerant between the inlet and the outlet. The bleed passage is adapted to bleed refrigerant to the evaporator immediately after the compressor shuts off to prime the air conditioning system for a lower superheat when the compressor turns on, and the bleed path has a flow capacity substantially smaller than the flow capacity of the main valve aperture.

A thermostatic expansion valve includes a valve body having an evaporator inlet port, an evaporator outlet port, a suction line port, and a liquid line port. A sensor chamber formed within the valve body is disposed between the evaporator outlet port and the suction line port. A valve is disposed within the valve body controls a flow of refrigerant from the liquid line port to the evaporator inlet port. A diaphragm separates a charge chamber and a pressure chamber where a pressure differential between a charge chamber and a pressure chamber controls the positioning of the valve. A restriction flow passage located to provide fluid communication between the sensor chamber and the pressure chamber is configured to limit a flow rate from the pressure chamber to sensor chamber, thereby slowing the opening of the valve resulting in a reduction of noise generated following an initial startup of a compressor.

A valve assembly for an air conditioning system includes a liquid line port pressurized at a discharge pressure, an evaporator inlet port pressurized at a suction pressure, a sequence valve for controlling a first flow path between the liquid line port and an outlet in response to a differential between the discharge pressure and the suction pressure, and a thermostatic expansion valve that includes an actuator and an expansion valve member for controlling a second flow path between the outlet and the evaporator inlet port in response to a pressure differential across the actuator.

Actuators and corresponding methods and systems for controlling such actuators offer efficient, fast, flexible control with large forces. In an exemplary embodiment, an fluid actuator includes a housing having first and second fluid ports, an actuation cylinder in the housing defining a longitudinal axis and having first and second ends in first and second directions, an actuation piston in the cylinder with first and second surfaces moveable along the longitudinal axis, a spring subsystem biasing the actuation piston to a neutral position, a first fluid space defined by the first end of the actuation cylinder and the first surface of the actuation piston, and a second fluid space defined by the second end of the actuation cylinder and the second surface of the actuation piston. A first flow mechanism controls fluid communication between the first fluid space and the first port, whereas a second flow mechanism controls fluid communication between the second fluid space and the second port. The first and second flow mechanisms are substantially restricted through two integrated snubbing mechanisms when the actuation piston approaches the first and second direction ends of its travel, respectively. In addition to a differential fluid force on the actuation piston, there is a centering or returning spring force available to help open the engine valve against the high cross-over passage pressure, without the need for the fluid actuation system to be bulky and consume too much energy.

Actuators, and corresponding methods and systems for controlling such actuators, provide independent lift and timing control with minimum energy consumption. In an exemplary embodiment, an electromechanical actuator comprises a housing, first and second electromagnets rigidly disposed in the housing and separated from each other by an armature chamber, an armature disposed in the armature chamber and movable between the first and second electromagnets, an armature rod rigidly connected with the armature and operably connected with a load, at least one first actuation spring biasing the armature in a first direction, at least one second actuation spring biasing the armature in a second direction, and one fluid-operated spring controller capable of controlling the position of the first-direction end of the at least one second actuation spring. The spring controller allows the actuation springs at their least compressed state and the engine valve closed when engine power is off. The spring controller may also be adjusted, with a low or moderate control fluid pressure, to allow the engine valve to operate with a partial lift.

Actuators and corresponding methods and systems for controlling such actuators offer efficient, fast, flexible control with large forces. In an exemplary embodiment, an fluid actuator includes a housing having first and second fluid ports, an actuation cylinder in the housing defining a longitudinal axis and having first and second ends in first and second directions, an actuation piston in the cylinder with first and second surfaces moveable along the longitudinal axis, a spring subsystem biasing the actuation piston to a neutral position, a first fluid space defined by the first end of the actuation cylinder and the first surface of the actuation piston, a second fluid space defined by the second end of the actuation cylinder and the second surface of the actuation piston; and a flow bypass that short-circuits the first and second fluid spaces when the actuation piston is not proximate to the second end of the actuation cylinder. A first flow mechanism controls fluid communication between the first fluid space and the first port, whereas a second flow mechanism controls fluid communication between the second fluid space and the second port. The first flow mechanism is always wide-open, whereas the second flow mechanism is open and closed when the flow bypass is closed and open, respectively. The system is able to latch the actuation piston at its second direction end position while making it possible for the actuation piston not to dwell at its first direction end position, thus reducing the overall actuation time.

Improved actuators and valve control systems, and methods for controlling actuators and/or engine valves, are disclosed. In addition to the inherent capability of timing control, the ability to provide continuous valve lift or stroke control greatly improves engine achieve fuel economy, emission and performance. The power-off state of the actuator is at the minimum stroke, from which an easy start-up can be directly executed. The minimum stroke is also very beneficial to achieve efficient low load operation. Even with continuous lift variation, the present invention is able to keep the spring force neutral or zero point in the center of a stroke, thus maintaining an efficient scheme of energy conversion and recovery through the pendulum action. When in compression braking or other high engine cylinder air pressure working mode, the invention is able to supply necessary force to open the engine valve. By adding a substantial hydraulic force to coincide with the spring returning force at the beginning of each stroke, the system can help overcome the engine cylinder air pressure and compensate for frictional losses. The invention incorporates lash adjustment into all alternative preferred embodiments, and makes it possible to trigger and complete one engine valve stroke by just one, instead of two, switch actions of the actuation switch valve.
