A method for operating a fastener driving device is disclosed. The method includes moving an input actuator of an actuating assembly into an operative position in response to movement of a contact trip assembly and a trigger member into the operative positions thereof. The contract trip assembly includes an output actuator. The method also includes moving an actuating member with respect to the trigger member between a first position and a second position, and moving a mode selecting member together with the actuating member relative to the trigger member between the first and second positions of the actuating member, and relatively moving the mode selecting member with respect to the actuating member.

Method for driving a fastener with a fastener driving device having an automatic dual-mode trigger assembly

A fastener driving device includes a trigger assembly operatively disposed between a contact trip assembly and an actuating assembly. The trigger assembly includes a trigger member, an actuating member, and an automatic mode selecting mechanism. The mode selecting mechanism includes a mode selecting member having a connection with the actuating member to make the mode selecting member () move with the actuating member between first and second positions of the actuating member, and () have relative movement with respect to the actuating member so that the mode selecting mechanism (a) retains the actuating member in the first position in response to an initial movement of the trigger member to the operative position, and (b) retains the actuating member in the second position in response to an initial movement of the contact trip assembly into the operative position and a subsequent movement of the trigger member into the operative position.

Fastener driving device with automatic dual-mode trigger assembly

A fastener-driving tool includes an integrated function member that performs at least two of the following three functions: a check pawl function, a last fastener-retaining function, and a dry fire lock-out function. In the disclosed embodiment, the integrated function member is provided as a lever-type structure that constitutes part of the access door assembly by means of which access is gained to the fastener drive track along which fasteners (e.g., roofing nails) are fed to the driving portion of the tool. Also disclosed is an improved method of retaining the last nail in the drive track by a lateral head gripping action and a tool for performing the method.

A fastener driving device includes a frame structure providing a handle portion and an adjustable annular exhaust air directing member mounted on the frame structure. The exhaust air directing member allows air displaced during the operation of the device to be directed by a rotational position thereof. A pair of O-rings are provided which act between the exhaust air directing member and the frame structure (1) to ensure that air is discharged into the atmosphere in a direction determined by the rotational position of the exhaust air directing member and (2) to yieldingly retain the exhaust air directing member in any rotational position into which it is manually moved. The frame structure includes a cylinder housing portion integral with the handle portion. A cap member is bolted in sealing relation to the cylinder housing portion and the exhaust air directing member is rotatably mounted to the cap member.

Fastener driving device with enhanced adjustable exhaust directing assembly

A fastener driving device comprising a magazine assembly including a rearward nosepiece portion cooperable with a fixed forward nosepiece portion to define a fastener guiding portion of a fastener drive track of the device. Cooperating guide structure disposed between the magazine assembly to be moved (1) into a normal operating position in a direction to move the rearward nosepiece portion toward a forward nosepiece portion and into cooperating relation together and (2) from said normal operating position in an opposite direction into an intermediate position wherein the nosepiece sections are spaced apart and beyond into separated relation with respect to the frame structure. A spring biased releasable latch assembly is manually movable between (1) a normal operating position resiliently biasing the magazine assembly into the normal operating position thereof enabling the rearward nosepiece portion of said magazine assembly in cooperating relation with the forward nosepiece portion to be yieldingly moved therefrom, (2) an intermediate position wherein the magazine assembly is resilient retained against movement beyond the intermediate position thereof to enable jammed fasteners to be removed from between the spaced apart rearward and forward nosepiece portions and (3) a separating position enabling the magazine assembly to be freely moved beyond the intermediate position into separated relation with respect to the frame structure.
