Techniques for producing a Brillouin laser are provided. According to some aspects, techniques are based on forward Brillouin scattering and a multimode acousto-optic waveguide in which light is scattered between optical modes of the waveguide via the Brillouin scattering. This process may transfer energy from a waveguide mode of pump light to a waveguide mode of Stokes light. This process may be referred to herein as Stimulated Inter-Modal Brillouin Scattering (SIMS). Since SIMS is based on forward Brillouin scattering, laser (Stokes) light may be output in a different direction than back toward the input pump light, and as such there is no need for a circulator or other non-reciprocal device to protect the pump light as in conventional devices.

Brillouin laser

A photonic modulator is provided that includes a transducer element that receives a RF input signal and converts the RF input signal into an elastic wave. One or more optical waveguides receive the elastic wave that has propagated a specified distance through an acoustic delay line. The one or more optical waveguides perform optomechanical transduction on the elastic wave in the presence of an optical wave, which produces one or more scattered optical waves. An optical circuit sums the one or more scattered waves to produce an optical signal output.

Electro-mechanic-photonic delay line for analog signal processing

A process is presented for the purification of an olefins feed stream to a benzene alkylation unit. The process removes heavy aromatics in an adsorbent system comprising at least two adsorbent units. The unit passes the olefins feed stream to a first adsorbent unit, while the second adsorbent unit is either in regeneration mode, or standby mode. The process switches the feed stream to the second adsorbent unit and displaces the fluid in the second adsorbent unit, while maintaining the flow of the purified feed stream to the benzene alkylation unit.

Two-bed paraffin to olefin enhancement process

A process is presented for the purification of an olefins feed stream to a benzene alkylation unit. The process removes heavy aromatics in a two adsorbent unit system. The unit passes the olefins feed stream to a first adsorbent unit, while the second adsorbent unit is either in regeneration mode, or standby mode. The process switches the feed stream to the second adsorbent unit and displaces the fluid in the second adsorbent unit, while maintaining the flow of the purified feed stream to the benzene alkylation unit.

The various technologies presented herein relate to various hybrid phononic-photonic waveguide structures that can exhibit nonlinear behavior associated with traveling-wave forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (forward-SBS). The various structures can simultaneously guide photons and phonons in a suspended membrane. By utilizing a suspended membrane, a substrate pathway can be eliminated for loss of phonons that suppresses SBS in conventional silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. Consequently, forward-SBS nonlinear susceptibilities are achievable at about 3000 times greater than achievable with a conventional waveguide system. Owing to the strong phonon-photon coupling achievable with the various embodiments, potential application for the various embodiments presented herein cover a range of radiofrequency (RF) and photonic signal processing applications. Further, the various embodiments presented herein are applicable to applications operating over a wide bandwidth, e.g. 100 MHz to 50 GHz or more.

Guided wave opto-acoustic device

A radio-frequency photonic devices employs photon-phonon coupling for information transfer. The device includes a membrane in which a two-dimensionally periodic phononic crystal (PnC) structure is patterned. The device also includes at least a first optical waveguide embedded in the membrane. At least a first line-defect region interrupts the PnC structure. The first optical waveguide is embedded within the line-defect region.

On-chip photonic-phononic emitter-receiver apparatus

Disclosed are fibers that include a composite of at least three different materials, where the at least three different materials include a conductor, an insulator, and a non-centrosymmetric material, and where each material is disposed in one or more different cross-sectional regions of the fiber, with each region extending along a common length of the fiber.

Multimaterial thermally drawn piezoelectric fibers

A gyrotropic metamaterial structure that include a plurality of chiral metamaterials forming one or more pairs of dipole structures. A plurality of lumped circuits are positioned between the one or more pairs of dipole structures. The lumped circuits have a plurality of subwavelengths antennas that are combined to change the polarization states of an incident polarized wave by producing Faraday-like rotation allowing for nomeciprocal propagation of the incident polarized wave.

Gyrotropic metamaterial structure

This invention relates to a product called unified spectral and geospatial information model and the method and system that generates the model. Here, the model comprises an airborne image of ground surface. The image in such a model has three-dimensional XY2 coordinates for every pixel of it and particularly multiple pixels of the image can have same XY coordinates. The XYZ coordinates of all the pixels of the image are uniquely attributed by the method and system presented in this invention. An image of the unified spectral and geospatial information model always covers a scene of ground surface. And, all objects visible in such a scene are measurable in terms of both radiometry and geometry. The unified spectral and geospatial information model can be made by the method and system of this invention with airborne imagery, GPS/IMU data, and ground surface elevation or range data.

Unified spectral and geospatial information model and the method and system generating it

This invention relates to a three-dimensional image of ground surface and the method and system that generates the three-dimensional image. Here, a three-dimensional image is an image that has three-dimensional XYZ coordinates in a ground coordinate system for every pixel of the image and the ground surface means the bare-earth surface plus all the objects on the bare-earth surface. The scene covered and represented by such a three-dimensional image is a three-dimensional real world scene where everything visible in the three-dimensional image has three-dimensional coordinates. The three-dimensional XYZ coordinates of all the pixels of a three-dimensional image are attributed by the method and system of this invention for generating three-dimensional images with airborne oblique/vertical imagery, GPS/IMU, and LIDAR ground surface elevation or range data. On such a three-dimensional image, one can make direct measurements of location, length, distance, height, area, and volume and indirect measurements including but not limited to profile and sight of view all in the real world three-dimensional coordinate system. Additionally, application systems that utilize three-dimensional images can make three-dimensional displays or perspective views of the ground surface with fly-through or walk-through, rotations and zoom in and out, and three-dimensional manipulation and simulation of ground surface.
