In certain examples, methods and semiconductor structures are directed to a strain sensor integrated with a membrane substrate, a pressure sensor, and a plurality of material layers. The material layers are to integrate the strain sensor, the pressure sensor and the membrane substrate, with the pressure and strain sensors operating co-operatively to indicate, in response to a force applied to or towards the pressure sensor, characterization information of the force applied and of deformation of the membrane substrate. In a more specific example, the strain sensor and the membrane substrate are integrated with the aforesaid at least one of the material layers, and at least a portion of the pressure sensor and the membrane substrate are stacked to permit sensing of the force concurrently by the strain sensor and the pressure sensor.

Devices and methods involving sensing in response to an applied touch or other force

Periodic placement of directional dynamic bonding units along a flexible polymer backbone enables the formation of large supramolecular structures during strain. These structures, which form due to the alignment of stretched backbone chains, lock the stretched chains in their elongated state due to the formation of the directional dynamic bonds. Application of an appropriate stimulus (i.e., heat or light) weakens the dynamic bonds and enables the elongated chains to retract, performing measurable work and enabling the use of these structures as polymer actuators. Importantly, the high strength of the dynamic bonds enables a large amount of entropic energy to be stored in the elongated chains, enabling the polymer to achieve a large actuation force during recovery.

A method of making flexible and stretchable semiconductor devices with reduced footprints can include coating a gate electrode layer having a first composition over an elastomer layer, solidifying a portion of the gate electrode layer by irradiation to form a gate electrode, coating a dielectric layer having a second composition over the gate electrode layer, solidifying a portion of the dielectric layer by the irradiation to form a gate dielectric, coating a semiconductor layer having a third composition over the dielectric layer, solidifying a portion of the semiconductor layer by the irradiation to form a device core, coating a terminal layer having the first composition over the dielectric layer, and solidifying a portion of the terminal layer by the irradiation to form a source electrode and a drain electrode contacting the semiconductor layer.

Various embodiments are directed to sensor apparatuses and methods thereof. An example sensor apparatus includes a plurality of capacitors and sensor circuitry. The plurality of capacitors including a first substrate having a plurality of first electrodes, a second substrate having a second electrode, and a dielectric material, and with the plurality of first electrodes and the second electrode being separated by the dielectric material. The plurality of first electrodes are aligned with respect to the second electrode such that each of plurality of first electrodes form one of the plurality of capacitors with the second electrode. The sensor circuitry is coupled to the plurality of capacitors to differentiate between normal and shear forces applied to apparatus based on a pattern of impedance responses of each of the plurality of capacitors formed by the second electrode and the plurality of first electrodes.

One or more embodiments relate to an electrically conductive polymer with a crosslinkable additive. The electrically conductive polymer is a directly photopatternable Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) PEDOT:PSS film with cross-linked network made of a plurality of monomers. The directly photopatternable PEDOT:PSS film PEDOT as such has a better conductivity and stretchability compared to its other counterparts. The directly photopatternable PEDOT:PSS film can further be supplemented with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) which can help with the removal of PSS. Advantageously, the PEGDA supplemented PEDOT:PSS film can exhibit a larger charge storage capacity.

Aspects of various embodiments are directed to sensor apparatuses and methods thereof. An example sensor apparatus includes a capacitor and sensor circuitry. The capacitor includes a first substrate having a first electrode, a second substrate having a second electrode, and a dielectric layer. The dielectric layer has a plurality of apertures arranged in a pattern, the first and second electrode being separated by the dielectric layer and arranged with an overlapping area with respect to one another. The sensor circuitry is coupled to the capacitor and configured and arranged to detect normal and shear forces applied to the sensor apparatus based on changes in capacitance derived from changes in at least one of a distance between the first and second electrodes and the overlapping area of the first and second electrodes.
