Compositions containing modified fullerenes and their use, for example, as films for membranes in electrode assemblies for electrochemical cells and fuel cells such as fuel cells are described.

Compositions containing modified fullerenes

There are provided electrically conducting polymer compositions comprising an electrectically conductive polymer or copolymer and an organic solvent wettable fluorinated acid polymer. Electrically conductive polymer materials are derived from thiophene, pyrrole, aniline and polycyclic heteroaromatic precursor monomers. Non-conductive polymers derived from alkenyl, alkynyl, arylene, and heteroarylene precursor monomers. The organic-solvent wettable fluorinated acid polymer is fluorinated or highly fluorinated and may be colloid-forming. Acidic groups include carboxylic acid groups, sulfonic acid groups, sulfonimide groups, phosphoric acid groups, phosphonic acid groups, and combinations thereof. The compositions can be used in organic electronic devices.

Electrically conductive polymer compositions

Ionic polymers are made from selected partially fluorinated dienes, in which the repeat units are cycloaliphatic. The polymers are formed into membranes.

Partially fluorinated cyclic ionic polymers and membranes

A fluorinated ion exchange polymer prepared by grafting at least one grafting monomer on to at least one base polymer, wherein the grafting monomer comprises structure 1a or 1b: wherein Z comprises S, SO, or POR wherein R comprises a linear or branched perfluoroalkyl group of 1 to 14 carbon atoms optionally containing oxygen or chlorine, an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms or a substituted aryl group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms; RF comprises a linear or branched perfluoroalkene group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, optionally containing oxygen or chlorine; Q is chosen from F, &#x2014;OM, NH, &#x2014;N(M)SOR, and C(M)(SOR), wherein M comprises H, an alkali cation, or ammonium; Rgroups comprises alkyl of 1 to 14 carbon atoms which may optionally include ether oxygens or aryl of 6 to 12 carbon atoms where the alkyl or aryl groups may be perfluorinated or partially fluorinated; and n is 1 or 2 for 1a, and n is 1, 2, or 3 for 1b. These ion exchange polymers are useful in preparing catalyst coated membranes and membrane electrode assemblies used in fuel cells.

Stable trifluorostyrene containing compounds grafted to base polymers, and their use as polymer electrolyte membranes

The present invention provides for a compound having the following structure: Zr(OPZYX)(03PR), wherein X=a functional group such as COH, PO(OH), and SOH, and SONHSOW, wherein W=aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms or Y; Y=perfluoro-linear, branched or cyclic alkylene group, wherein the alkylene is 1-20 carbon atoms, or a fluorinated group containing at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of oxygen, chlorine and bromine; Z=alkylene of 1-12 carbon atoms, aryl of 6-10 carbon atoms, or a heterocyclic aryl group of 3-10 carbons atoms; R=alkyl of 1-12 carbon atoms, aryl of 6-10 carbon atoms, substituted alkyl, or substituted aryl, wherein the substituent is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, perfluoroalkyl, alkyl of 1-12 carbon atoms and aryl of 6-10 carbon atoms; n=0 or 1; q=0 or 1; and m=0 to 1.5; with the proviso that when n=0, and q=1, Z=at least one heterocyclic group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, 1 to 5 nitrogen atoms and 0 to 4 oxygen atoms. The invention also provides a polymer electrolyte membrane, a catalyst coated membrane and a fuel cell having this compound.

A fluorinated ion exchange polymer is prepared by grafting at least one grafting monomer derived from trifluorostyrene on to at least one base polymer in a organic solvent/water mixture.
