A sub-aqueous capping material comprising a plurality of compacted particles of a reactive solid material having a dispersion aid homogeneously blended therein, the compacted particles having a specific gravity greater than 1.0, a particle size in the range of about 1/16 inch to about 1 inch, and having a time for disintegration, once in contact with water, of 5 hours or less.

Herein is disclosed a flue gas scrubbing composition, a method of using the flue gas scrubbing composition, and a method of entombing mercury collected with the flue gas scrubbing composition. The flue gas scrubbing composition includes an admixture of a mercury sorbent material that comprises a clay, copper, and sulfur; and lime that comprises calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide. The method of collecting mercury from a flue gas includes injecting the flue gas scrubbing composition of any one of the preceding claims into a flue duct comprising the flue gas; reacting the mercury sorbent material with mercury in the flue gas to form a mercury-sorbed material and thereby reducing the concentration of mercury in the flue gas; reacting the lime with SO, SO, and/or HCl in the flue gas to form a calcium sulfate and/or a calcium chloride; and collecting a mixture that includes the mercury-sorbed material. The method of entombing mercury includes mixing the collected mixture of any one of claimstowith water to form a freshly mixed concrete; and casting the freshly mixed concrete into a form.

Flue gas scrubbing

The use of a coupling agent containing a mercapto, disulfide, tretrasulfide and/or polysulfide end group provides a mercury removal media having increased reactivity, stability, and mercury removal ability. The mercury removal media described herein is prepared by reacting an organophilic clay containing onium ions with a mercapto, disulfide, tetrasulfide, and/or polysulfide end moiety. Alternatively, the clay can be made organophilic by onium ion reaction prior to or simultaneously with the coupling reaction of the mercapto- or sulfide-end group-containing coupling agent.

A method of preparing a mercury sorbent material comprising making a copper/clay mixture by admixing a dry clay and a dry copper source; making a sulfur/clay mixture by admixing a dry clay and a dry sulfur source; admixing the copper/clay mixture and the sulfur/clay mixture, to form a mercury sorbent pre-mixture; and shearing the mercury sorbent pre-mixture to form the mercury sorbent material. The mercury sorbent material has an interlayer d(001)-spacing of less than 12 &#x212b; when the mercury sorbent material contains less than 4 wt % water, and a powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the mercury sorbent material is substantially free of a diffraction peak at 2.73&#xb1;0.01 &#x212b;, and the &#x3b6;-potential of the mercury sorbent material is greater than the &#x3b6;-potential of the dry clay.

The use of a sulfur-impregnated organoclay provides a mercury or arsenic removal media having increased reactivity, stability, and mercury removal ability. The Hg/As removal media described herein is prepared by impregnating an organophilic clay with elemental (free state) sulfur. Alternatively, the clay can be made organophilic by onium ion reaction prior to or simultaneously with impregnating the organoclay with sulfur.

The use of two mercury and arsenic removal media: A) a sulfur-impregnated organoclay; and B) a coupling agent-reacted organoclay, wherein the coupling agent preferably contains a mercapto, disulfide, tretrasulfide and/or polysulfide end group provides mercury removal media having increased reactivity, stability, and synergistic mercury removal ability. The preferred mercury removal media described herein is prepared by reacting an organophilic clay containing onium ions A) with elemental sulfur; and B) with a sulfur-containing coupling agent, preferably containing a mercapto, disulfide, tetrasulfide, and/or polysulfide moiety.

Sulfur-impregnated and coupling agent-reacted organoclay mercury and/or arsenic ion removal media

A particulate non-clumping animal litter composition is disclosed. The composition comprises non-clumping absorbent particles bound to magnetically-attractable metal particles such that substantially all particles of the animal litter composition are attracted to a magnetic surface. The animal litter composition exhibits favorable properties such as absorbency, resiliency, homogeneity, and particle size. Methods of production for non-clumping animal litter compositions are also disclosed that employ sufficient shear to bind the non-clumping absorbent particulate material to the magnetically-attractable metal particles such that the animal litter compositions exhibit favorable properties. A method and apparatus for the collection of magnetically-attractable animal litter particles are also disclosed.
