Glass-based articles that include a reduced Young's modulus layer extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of layer and an optional compressive stress layer extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of compression are formed by exposing glass-based substrates to water vapor containing environments. The methods of forming the glass-based articles may include elevated pressures and/or multiple exposures to water vapor containing environments. The glass-based articles may be utilized in foldable or flexible electronic devices.

A method of manufacturing a strengthened glass article includes forming a glass-to-glass laminate by fusing clad and core glasses, where the clad has greater high-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (HTCTE) than the core but a lesser low-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (LTCTE). The method includes cooling the laminate to impart stresses through contraction mismatch between the clad and core, where stresses in the laminate from HTCTE differences at least partially offset stresses in the laminate from LTCTE. After the cooling, the method includes modifying geometry of the laminate, then relaxing at least some of the stresses in the glass-to-glass laminate from differences in the HTCTE.

Glass ceramic articles having improved properties and methods for making the same

A system and process for forming a curved glass laminate article is provided. The process and system utilizes co-sagging of a stack of glass sheets of different thicknesses and different glass materials. During co-sagging the thicker glass layer is placed on top of the thinner glass layer. In this process, shape mismatch is avoided by selecting/controlling the glass materials of the sheets of glass such that the viscosity of the lower, thinner sheet during co-sagging is greater than the viscosity of the thicker glass sheet.

System and process for forming curved glass laminate article utilizing glass viscosity differential for improved shape matching

A cold-formed glass laminate may include a first ply of 3D formed glass with a first thickness and a first strength. The first ply may include pre-formed residual compressive stresses in a peripheral edge portion adapted to offset tensile stresses resulting from a cold-forming process. The laminate may also include a second ply of 3D formed glass with a second thickness less than the first thickness and a second strength greater than the first strength. An adhesive may be arranged between the first ply and the second ply and post-formed residual stresses in the peripheral edge portion of the first ply of the laminate may remain compressive. A method of forming a glass laminate with compressive edge stresses is also described.

Edge stress using differential cooling

A method for ceramming a glass article to a glass-ceramic includes placing a glass article into a heating apparatus, and heating the glass article to a first hold temperature at a first predetermined heating rate. The glass article is held at the first hold temperature for a first predetermined duration. The viscosity of the glass article is maintained within log viscosity &#xb1;1.0 poise during the first predetermined duration. The glass article is then heated from the first hold temperature to a second hold temperature at a second predetermined heating rate. The glass article is held at the second hold temperature for a second duration. A density of the glass article is monitored from the heating of the glass article from the first hold temperature through the second duration, and the second duration is ended when an absolute value of a density rate of change of the glass article is less than or equal to 0.10 (g/cm)/min.

Methods for ceramming glass with nucleation and growth density and viscosity changes

A process and system for forming a curved glass article from a sheet of glass material is provided. The process and system includes supporting a glass sheet on a shaping frame and then heating the sheet of glass material while supported by the shaping frame such that the central region of the sheet of glass material deforms into an open central cavity of the bending frame. The process and/or system are configured such that a steep, localized temperature differential is formed in the region adjacent the outer edge of the glass sheet during the heating stage of the shaping process.

Methods for producing a glass sheet are provided. The methods can include forming a glass ribbon from molten glass, applying a polymer precursor to at least a portion of a first or second major surface of the glass ribbon, curing the polymer precursor to form a polymer coating, and separating the glass ribbon to produce at least one glass sheet. Glass ribbons and glass sheets produced by these methods are also disclosed.

Embodiments of the disclosure relate to a method of controlling the flow of fluid, such as air, between a stack of glass sheets during a co-sagging process. In embodiments, this involves a particular method and certain mechanical means of applying force at or near the edges and/or corners of a stack of glass sheets during a co-sagging process. In other embodiments, this involves creating low pressure regions at or near the edges and/or corners during the co-sagging process. According to one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a glass article having a three-dimensional shape includes heating a glass article blank to a temperature above a setting temperature and coupling the glass article blank to an open-faced mold. The open-faced mold includes a molding region that has a three-dimensional shape that generally corresponds to the shape of the glass article and has an anisothermal temperature profile within the molding region. The method further includes maintaining an anisothermal temperature profile along the glass article blank and cooling the glass article blank while the glass article blank is coupled to the molding region of the open-faced mold to set the shape of the glass article.
