This invention describes a new and convenient single step process for preparing 2-aryl-3-substituted-4(3H)-pyrimidinone herbicides by reacting a N-substituted amidine (or its hydrohalide salt) with a .beta.-keto ester under conditions of high pressure. The 2-aryl-3-substituted pyrimidinone compounds produced by the process of the present invention are very useful as herbicidal agents for the control of weeds in agronomically important crops.

Also, methods for the production of the compounds and their intermediates, which methods comprise either admixing a 3-amino-2-(substituted)-benzoic acid, sodium nitrite and methanol under acidic conditions or admixing a 3,4-fused heterocyclic benzoic acid and an alkyl lithium reagent followed by subsequent reaction with an electrophilic reagent.

A new process has been developed for preparing high purity neem seed extract by adsorbing aqueous solutions of neem seed extract containing azadirachtin onto a macroporous polymeric adsorbent followed by desorption using a solvent. The resulting extract, optionally formulated, is a useful insecticide for the control of foliar pests.

A neem seed extract containing azadirachtin with improved stability has been developed using a process involving dissolution of the crude neem seed extract in a polar solvent and removal of impurities by precipitation and/or treatment of the extract with an oxidizing agent. The resulting extract, optionally formulated as a wettable powder, is a useful insecticide for the control of foliar pests.
