A clamping assembly for use with a bend arm of a tube bending machine. The assembly comprises a force multiplier linkage that applies a controlled and variable force to a workpiece. In one embodiment, the force multiplier linkage comprises a bearing member pivoted by an actuator acting on one end of a force multiplier arm that is attached to the bearing member. A pivot member supporting a drive link is fixedly attached to the bearing member at a location offset from the bearing member's pivot axis. The drive link pivots about the pivot member axis so that in cooperation with additional links it moves a bend arm slider. The drive link also pivots about the bearing member axis. As the bearing member is pivoted about its axis by the force multiplier arm, the drive link also pivots about the bearing member's axis providing the required force for application to the workpiece.

Clamp assembly for bend arm of tube bending machine

A bending machine has a machine bed on which a pipe supporting carriage is mounted to move a pipe in a first direction toward a dual bend head assembly at the forward end of the machine bed. The assembly has a support frame and first and second spaced bend heads each rotatably mounted on the frame for rotation about a horizontal bend axis aligned with the bend axis of the other bend head. Each bend head has at least one pair of opposing bend and clamp dies defining a die cavity. The dual bend head assembly is movably mounted on the forward end of the machine bed for movement in a horizontal direction transverse to the pipe axis between at least two horizontally spaced positions in which the pipe is aligned with the die cavity of the first and second bend head, respectively.

An oil filter crusher includes a frame, a threaded drive screw, and a ram assembly, but does not include any actuator for driving the screw. Rather, a first end of the drive screw has a drive head to which a user may couple a conventional wrench, such as a pneumatic impact wrench of the type commonly used in automotive service centers. A thrust bearing assembly couples the second end of the drive screw to the ram assembly. A threaded portion of the drive screw engages a threaded opening in a portion of the frame. The ram assembly thus moves in an axial direction in response to rotation of the drive screw with respect to the frame. Rotating the drive screw in one direction moves it toward the filter to be crushed, and rotating it in the opposite direction moves it away from the filter.

Method of crushing an oil filter

An oil filter crusher includes an elongated triangular frame, a threaded drive screw, and a ram assembly, but does not include any actuator for driving the screw. Rather, a first end of the drive screw has a drive head to which a user may couple a conventional wrench, such as a pneumatic impact wrench of the type commonly used in automotive service centers. A thrust bearing assembly couples the second end of the drive screw to the ram assembly. A threaded portion of the drive screw engages a threaded opening in a portion of the frame. The ram assembly thus moves in an axial direction in response to rotation of the drive screw with respect to the frame. Rotating the drive screw in one direction moves it toward the filter to be crushed, and rotating it in the opposite direction moves it away from the filter.

Oil filter crusher

A bend arm assembly pivotable about a given axis of a bending machine and including a clamp die mechanism with a clamp die for coaction witha rotary bend die for clamping a workpiece for bending, the bend arm assembly including the clamp die mechanism then pivoting through the desired bend angle, as a unit, about the axis of the bend die. The bend arm assembly includes a back plate, with first and second guide slots, with the clamp die assembly mounted on the end of a clamp die block, which has laterally protruding guide bolts extending into the guide slots. A cam plate is secured to the clamp die block in depending relation, and is provided with a cam slot. A hydraulic cylinder driven cam actuator arm assembly includes interconnected parallel arms, which pivot about an axis, which is pivotally coupled to the structure about which the bend die pivots, with a cam follower rod extending through the cam slot. The guide slots and the cam slot are configured for moving the clamp die assembly in a first direction at a slight angle to a line parallel to the pivot axis, and in a second direction generally perpendicular to the pivot axis, the distance of movement in the second direction being generally equal to the radius of the workpiece, with the cam slot configured for enabling linear and predictable application of clamping force on the workpiece being bent.

Method for tube bending with controlled clamp die arrangement

A bend arm assembly pivotable about a given axis of a bending machine and including a clamp die mechanism with a clamp die for coaction with a rotary bend die for clamping a workpiece for bending, the bend arm assembly including the clamp die mechanism then pivoting through the desired bend angle, as a unit, about the axis of the bend die. The bend arm assembly includes a back plate, with first and second guide slots, with the clamp die assembly mounted on the end of a clamp die block, which has laterally protruding guide bolts extending into the guide slots. A cam plate is secured to the clamp die block in depending relation, and is provided with a cam slot. A hydraulic cylinder driven cam actuator arm assembly includes interconnected parallel arms, which pivot about an axis, which is pivotally coupled to the structure about which the bend die pivots, with a cam follower rod extending through the cam slot. The guide slots and the cam slot are configured for moving the clamp die assembly in a first direction at a slight angle to a line parallel to the pivot axis, and in a second direction generally perpendicular to the pivot axis, the distance of movement in the second direction being generally equal to the radius of the workpiece, with the cam slot configured for enabling linear and predictable application of clamping force on the workpiece being bent.

Bend arm apparatus for tube bending machine with cammed clamp die

A drive mechanism for the bend arm of bending apparatus wherein a drive motor has the drive shaft thereof generally parallel to the axis of pivoting of the bend arm assembly, and along a line at an angle to the feed direction of a tube. The drive shaft is directly coupled to a bell crank having first and second generally perpendicular arms. A like bell crank arrangement is formed in the bend arm and is driveably coupled to the bend arm pivot shaft with the bend arm bell crank in aligned relation to the drive motor bell crank. First and second generally identical rigid noncompliant link arms have the first ends thereof pivotally coupled to the free ends of the arms of the bend arm bell crank, with the other end thereof pivotally coupled to the free ends of the drive motor bell crank. The link arms are generally L-shaped, with the distal ends of the short legs thereof coupled to the bend arm bell crank, one of the ends above the crank and one below the crank. The distal ends of the long arms are similarly interconnected with one above and one below the drive motor bell crank. The position of the drive shaft relative to the tube feed direction, coupled with the angular configuration and spatial positioning of the short leg relative to the long leg of the link member enables pivoting of the bend arm through an angle in excess of one hundred eighty degrees.

Link drive for bending arm of tube bending machine

A rotary draw bending machine employs a stack of bending dies 22 of different curvatures, forming part of a bend head 18 that is entirely mounted on the forward end of the machine bed 10 for bi-directional lateral and vertical motion so that without changing the position of the centerline of the pipe 16 to be bent, it may be formed by bend dies of different curvature. The entire bend head 18 is shiftable laterally to enable the bend dies to clear the pipe 16 as the dies move vertically to position another die. A single pressure die 20, which is mounted on the movable bend head 18, is mounted for vertical movement relative to the bend head so that it can be positioned in alignment with the pipe.
