An improvement is disclosed in a process for producing foamed articles of thermo-plastic or thermo-setting compounds. The improvement reduces the number of steps normally followed to make a foamed product and cuts down on the time. The improvement comprises the steps of intensively mixing and thermokinetically heating a batch of the compounds with a foaming agent having a preselected trigger temperature to initiate gas evolution, the mixing and heating occurring in an enclosed mixing chamber with a plurality of blades attached to arms rotating about an axis, with a blade tip speed of at least about 18 meters per second, mixing until the compounds and the foaming agent are heated above the trigger temperature of the foaming agent to a mixture having a predetermined discharge temperature representing a state of flux of the compounds suitable for forming and the mixture having a viscosity sufficient to contain gas evolved from the foaming agent, discharging the batch from the chamber when the batch reaches the predetermined temperature, and feeding the mixture from the discharged batch to a forming unit while foaming is still occurring.

Process for producing foamed plastic articles

A powder blend of rigid polyvinyl chloride resin having higher packing densities than previously known is disclosed. The higher packing densities provide improved physical properties and production rates. There is also disclosed a process for the manufacture of a powder blend of suitable thermoplastic polymer resins having high packing densities for processing into articles. The process includes mixing and thermokinetically heating a batch of powder blend in a high intensity mixer having a plurality of blades attached to arms rotating about an axis with a blade tip speed of at least about 25 meters/second to a predetermined temperature below commencement of agglomeration, and cooling the batch in a high intensity mixer having a plurality of blades attached to arms rotating about an axis with a blade tip speed less than about 16 meters/second but sufficient to attain high packing densities, to a temperature at which the batch can be stored without agglomeration occuring.

Polymeric resins and blends with high packing densities

An apparatus and a process is disclosed for controlled mixing of a mixable material in a high intensity mixer. The system enables instantaneous, precise and continual monitoring of a batch in a high intensity mixer which heretofore could not be achieved. The process comprises the steps of feeding a batch of material into a high intensity mixer, agitating the batch in the mixer, monitoring batch temperature separately from mixer temperature and discharging the batch from the mixer when the batch temperature reaches a final predetermined level. The apparatus includes means for monitoring batch temperature in a high intensity mixer separately from mixer temperature, and means responsive to the batch temperature to discharge the batch when the batch temperature reaches a final predetermined level.

Apparatus for controlled mixing in a high intensity mixer

A process is disclosed for separating bitumen from a bitumen tar deposit. The process is a mechanical separation process which is simple, economical and yet does not require high energy consumption. The bitumen sand deposit includes sand particles with coating of bitumen thereon. The process comprises the steps of feeding the bitumen sand deposit and a dispersing medium into an enclosed container having a plurality of arms therein, adapted to rotate about a central axis, each arm having a blade at the end thereof, rotating the plurality of arms, striking and impelling the sand particles to impact on internal surfaces of the blades and container and with other particles, the blades having sufficient tip speed to cause separation of the bitumen coatings from the particles, discharging the sand particles, bitumen and dispersing medium from the container, and collecting the bitumen separately from the sand particles and dispersing medium.

Process for separating bitumen from a bitumen sand deposit

A process for producing articles of ultra high molecular weight high density polyethylene is disclosed which avoids long heating and cooling cycles, and compacting pressures in the order of 3,000 to 4,000 lbs/sq. inch. The resin is intensively mixed and thermokinetically heated in an enclosed container with a plurality of blades attached to arms rotating about an axis with a blade tip speed of at least 18 m/sec. until the resin reaches a desired discharge temperature of at least 135.degree. C. After being discharged from the mixing step, the ultra high molecular weight resin is formed into the desired shape within a time such that degradation does not occur.
