A computer-implemented method includes displaying within a web browser executing on a computing device an offer to activate a data communication service for the computing device to communicate over a cellular network. A communication link is establish, through the web browser, between the computing device and a data plan web portal configured to receive information from a user of the computing device, where the information is used to activate the data communication service. An encrypted message including a unique identifier of the computing device is transmitted from the computing device, through the web browser, to the data plan web portal. A message including instructions to execute a process on the computing device to activate the data communication service for the computing device to communicate over the cellular network is received, through the web browser, at the computing device.

Mobile device activation

A method includes transforming a mode of a computer from an operating system mode to a kiosk mode, wherein the kiosk mode provides a user interface for one web application, and wherein the kiosk mode prevents access to any other application or the operating system of the computer. The computer automatically updates the web application via a network while the computer is operating in kiosk mode, and automatically updates an operating system of the computer via the network while the computer is operating in kiosk mode. The computer automatically re-launches the web application in response to detecting an interrupted status of the web application while the computer is operating in kiosk mode.

Methods and apparatus for authenticating computing device users are disclosed. An example method includes, providing, on a display device of a computing device, a graphical user interface (GUI) including a user authentication display portion and receiving, from a remote authentication server, visual content and functional content corresponding with the user authentication display portion. The method further includes receiving, via the user authentication display portion, a set of user credentials and communicating the received user credentials to the remote user authentication server. The method still further includes receiving, from the remote user authentication server; an authorization message indicating whether or not authentication of the user credentials was successful. In the event authentication of the set of user credentials was successful, the user is granted access to the computing device. In the event authentication of the set of user credentials was not successful, the user is denied access to the computing device.

User authentication using swappable user authentication services

A system and machine-implemented method for automatically linking a mobile device to a video conference control unit of a video conference site, providing control of the video conference control unit by the mobile device. A proximity detector and a wireless controller provide automatic linking with the mobile device. The linked mobile device adds the participant using the mobile device to a video conference and also controls video conference settings or functions without the need for a central user interface.

Control of a video conference system using personal devices

A method includes registering a web application, which is executable through a web browser, as a default file handler of a particular type of locally-stored files. A computing device provides a file manager interface that is configured to facilitate interaction, by a user, with a local filesystem of the computing device. The file manager interface receives a user selection of a file included in the local filesystem, where the file belongs to the particular type of files. Based on the user's selection, a user selectable action element is provided in the file manager interface to invoke the registered web application to handle the selected file. The file manager interface receives a user selection of the user selectable action element; and in response to the user selection of the user selectable action element the registered web application is automatically invoked to handle the selected file.

Using a web application as the default handler of local content

A method performed by a server device includes receiving a request from a client, the request including data to identify a component of a graphical user interface (GUI) application; and determining that an updated version of the component is available. The method also includes retrieving, from a memory associated with the server device, the updated version of the component and providing the updated version of the component to the client.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer program products, for translation of markup language documents with display replacement. In some implementations, a method includes displaying a markup language document in an original language by rendering an internal representation of the document, sending a data structure containing the texts from the text nodes of the internal representation, as distinct data entities, to a translation service, replacing the texts with translated texts received from the translation service resulting in a translated representation, and displaying a first translation of the document by rendering the translated representation. In some implementations, partial, incremental translation is performed. In some implementations, a method includes receiving a notification that a phrase in a markup language document has been selected, requesting translation of the text of the selected phrase, and then displaying a received translation in a user interface.
