A roadway milling machine includes a hollow, cylindrically walled, shaft mounted, imperforate drum having tungsten carbide tipped steel cutting tools supported in tool holders extending generally radially outwardly from the cylindrical surface of the drum. The drum is moved over a roadway to be milled, and is rotated on its shaft to bring the cutting tools into operative contact with the roadway. Water is fed into the drum along a water access opening provided along the axis of the drum shaft; and this coolant leaves the drum through openings provided in the cylindrical drum wall, one adjacent to each cutting tool, in position where the coolant leaving the drum will impinge upon and cool its adjacent cutting tool. In order to limit the flow of water from the drum to the cutting tools and, at the same time, to prevent the necessarily small openings from clogging up, large openings can be provided through the cylindrical drum wall and well into the tool holders which extend integrally outwardly from that wall. A transverse opening through each tool holder is open to the tool holder large radial opening in the tool holder. This transverse opening is almost completely fitted with a bolt or other rod-like structure. The minimum cross-sectional area of the bolt is less than that of the transverse slot, and the bolt is free to vibrate or otherwise move under the impetus of the shock to the tool and tool holder as the tool strikes the roadway on each rotation of the drum.

Apparatus and method for delivering liquid coolant to drum mounted

An earth compacting machine includes an earth contacting drum rotatably supported on at least one main drum support bearing mounted in a drum support assembly which is fixed to the machine frame. Means is provided to slowly rotate the drum with respect to the frame. There is a slow speed rotary seal between the drum support assembly and a main drum hub which extends outwardly from the drum. The interior of the drum support assembly, the rotary seal and an outer surface of the main drum hub form a first lubrication oil sump. Oil is introduced into this sump to cover a substantial lower portion of the main drum support bearing. A vibratory shaft bearing is mounted in a vibratory shaft bearing housing at each end of the drum. These shaft bearings support a vibratory shaft inside of the drum. Means opening through the main drum support bearing and the main drum hub is provided to rapidly rotate the vibratory shaft with respect to the drum. A cylindrical second oil sump is sealed to both of the vibratory shafts bearing housings to provide lubrication oil to each of the vibratory shaft bearings without the need for a high speed rotary seal between the vibratory shaft and the slower moving drum.

Lubrication and bearing structure for concentric, independently rotating

An earth compacting machine includes a hollow drum rotatably mounted at each end to the machine frame to rotate on a horizontal axis, and a concentric vibratory shaft rotatably mounted at each end in a bearing which is mounted in a bearing housing fixedly mounted to the drum. A cylindrical oil sump mounted to rotate with the drum, surrounds the vibratory shaft and shaft bearings and encompasses the bearing housings. Lubrication oil in the sump covers a lower portion of the bearing housings but is below the lowest level reached by the vibratory shaft and its offset weight. Each bearing housing has a plurality of pockets provided therein open through oil access ports to the oil sump and through oil delivery ports to its associated bearing. Oil flows into a pocket when its oil access port is below the level of oil in the sump; and flows out of the pocket as the oil delivery port approaches and pass over the axis of horizontal rotation.
