The present invention envisions the use of a coherent signal to make up for lost or delayed samples to a modem. The modem contains a coherent phase buffer containing samples of at least a cycle of a coherent signal corresponding to an outgoing signal. When, for any reason, the samples for the outgoing signal are lost or delayed, the modem adaptively patches the outgoing signal with samples from the coherent phase buffer. The modem tracks the outgoing signal, and synchronizes a pointer into the coherent phase buffer outgoing signal. Thus, when the outgoing signal samples are delayed or lost, the modem may replace the invalid samples from the samples of the outgoing data signal with a patch of an appropriate sample or samples from the coherent phase buffer. As such, disruptions of the modem session associated with an incoherent signal during modem communications are avoided.

Modem using phase coherence to adapt for missing transmission samples

A multi-task structure for a software modem including a plurality of self-contained executable entities. The executable entities include at least a controller and a data pump with the controller operating as an interface between an operating system driver and the data pump when signals are passed from the operating system driver to the data pump. In addition, the data pump includes at least a scheduler and a hardware driver, the scheduler interacting with additional self-contained executable entities and enabling the data pump to operate using one or more individual ones of the additional self-contained executable entities according to the signals passed from the controller to the data pump.

A system and a method for building an online database for a computer system having a server module configured to receive information from client modules. The method comprises configuring at least one client module to communicate with the server module when the at least one client module is operating on the computer system. At least one communication channel is established between the at least one client module and the server module such that information may be passed from the at least one client module to the server module. This information is passed through the at least one communication channel from the at least one client module to the server module and compiled, with the server module, in a manner selected by a user of the computer system. The information is displayed in the manner selected by the user of the computer system to thereby assist in diagnostics of the computer system.

The communication system monitors a communication channel that is created between the remote communication device and controls the communication device by adjusting internal settings of the communication device that represent communication parameters. The communication device is communicatively coupled to a communication channel to carry out ongoing communications between the communication device and the communication channel. Further, a software module is associated with the communication device, and the software module accesses the internal settings of the communication device from a remote location via the communication channel and performs diagnostics such as monitoring, controlling, and configuring the communication device using the internal settings of the communication device.

Method and apparatus for monitoring, controlling, and configuring remote communication devices

A communication system for monitoring and/or controlling communication parameters of a communication device. The communication system monitors a communication channel that is created when the communication device connects to a network, controls the communication device as it operates on the network, and configures the communication device. The communication device is commonly a modem and is communicatively coupled to the network to carry out ongoing communications between the modem and the network through the communication channel. Further, a software module is associated with the modem, and the software module accesses the internal settings of the modem via the communication channel (if necessary) and performs operations such as monitoring, controlling, and configuring the modem (or other communication device) using the internal settings of the modem.

Method and apparatus for monitoring, controlling and configuring local communication devices

A communication system according to the present invention includes a first communication device having a first digital signal processor and a first codec and a second communication device having a second digital signal processor and a second codec. The second communication device is communicatively coupled with the first communication device via a communication channel. The first digital signal processor enables frequency division multiplexed sampling of signals from the first codec, and the second digital signal processor enables receipt of the division multiplexed sampling of signals from the first digital signal processor such that the sampling of signals is transmitted to the second codec in a manner so as not to interfere with other communications of the first communication device.

An apparatus for and method of implementing a novel buffer based full duplex communication system is disclosed. The disclosed invention is particularly useful in native signal processing systems wherein heavy contention of processor resources typically exist, such as in systems running multi-tasking operating systems. The communication system of the present invention includes a receiver, transmitter, echo canceler, CODEC and telephone hybrid. The major components of the system operate on a buffer of input samples consisting of a set of input bits. The communication system operates to generate a buffer of output samples consisting of a set of output bits. The invention utilizes a novel buffer switching mechanism to optimize the tradeoff between processing response time, on one hand, and robustness to interrupt latency and processor implementation on the other hand. The internal processing of the modem works on a buffer full of samples once every time slice thus reducing the probability of a buffer underrun/overrun error occurring. The reduction in probability of data underrun/overrun is achieved by increasing the buffer size, thus giving the operating system greater leeway in choosing the exact time the signal processing functions are run. Small buffers, however, provide the communication system with short and accurate response time. These contradicting motives lead to the novel switchable size buffer scheme of the present invention. This is achieved without a loss of signal coherency.

Echo canceling modem which dynamically switches sizes of sample buffer

An apparatus for and method of implementing a novel buffer based fall duplex communication system is disclosed. The disclosed invention is particularly useful in native signal processing systems wherein heavy contention of processor resources typically exist, such as in systems running multi-tasking operating systems. The communication system of the present invention includes a receiver, transmitter, CODEC and telephone hybrid. The major components of the system operate on a buffer of input samples consisting of a set of input bits. The communication system operates to generate a buffer of output samples consisting of a set of output bits. The invention utilizes a novel dynamic buffer size mechanism to optimize the tradeoff between buffer delay and processing time period, on one hand, and robustness to interrupt latency and processor availability on the other hand. Small buffers provide the communication system with short, accurate response times in addition to short processing times. Using a large buffer of spare or dummy samples to be transmitted while the CPU is unavailable reduces the probability of a buffer underrun, thus giving the operating system greater leeway in deciding the exact time the signal processing functions in the modem routine are run. In this manner latency time is held to a minimum and data is not lost or corrupted. The concept of using dummy bits or silence for the generation of spare samples enables the elimination of additional latency caused by the spare samples by overriding them if they are not transmitted. This is achieved without a loss of signal coherency.

Communication system which dynamically switches sizes of sample buffer

A directory for a plurality of information items stored in an electronic memory device is not retained in a continuous error-free portion of memory. Instead the memory area of the device is divided into blocks, with each block being assigned to no more than one information item. Each block is required to have a 'recoverable' portion of memory that need not be error-free but from which original data can be accurately read, with the assistance of an error correction algorithm, despite the presence of certain error(s). Directory data for a block are stored in such block, thereby markedly reducing the length of a continuous portion of memory needed to store the directory data.
