A liquid phase catalytic alkylation of methylamine by long chain fatty alcohols, using as catalyst a mixture of compounds containing nickel, copper, and Group IIA metal, to provide mixtures of monoalkyl, dialkyl and trialkyl amines of preselected ratios, which, upon quaternization with methyl chloride, produce commercial mixtures of monoalkyl, dialkyl and trialkyl quaternary ammonium salts.

Imidazoline oxides

This invention relates to amphoteric surface-active agents which have extremely powerful inhibitory action against Gram positive bacteria and which are substantially free from metal halide, and, particularly, sodium chloride. These compounds have the general structure: ##EQU1## wherein R is a straight chain alkyl having from 6 to 16 carbon atoms, R' is a lower alkyl, and M is either hydrogen, an alkali metal or an alkylolamine.
