A hybrid fuel cell/battery including one or more electrochemical cell units comprising at least one cathode, at least one anode, and at least one auxiliary electrode. The auxiliary electrode works in combination with the anode to provide a current as a rechargeable battery while the anode and cathode work in combination to provide an electrical current as a fuel cell. The cathode and the auxiliary electrode may operate alone or in tandem to provide an electrical current.

Hybrid fuel cell

The present invention discloses a fuel cell, which incorporates a bipolar plate. The regenerative bipolar fuel cell of the present invention contains at least one hydrogen electrode in contact with a hydrogen stream and at least one oxygen electrode in contact with an oxygen stream. At least one electrolyte chamber is in contact with the hydrogen electrode and at least one electrolyte chamber is in contact with the oxygen electrode. The electrolyte chambers provide mechanical support within the fuel cell and provide an uninterrupted pathway for an electrolyte solution to contact the hydrogen electrode and the oxygen electrode, respectively. At least one bipolar plate is positioned between the hydrogen electrode and the oxygen electrode. The bipolar plate has a hydrogen side in contact with the hydrogen electrode and an oxygen side in contact with the oxygen electrode. The bipolar plate eliminates the need for electrode support frames within a fuel cell and provides an entire electrode in one epoxy frame that ensures the integrity of the different pieces while maintaining the different fluids to be available at the points of their respective reactions. In addition, the bipolar plate acts as a manifold for gas distribution and a gasket for sealing.

Regenerative bipolar fuel cell

A vehicle drive system powered by a hybrid fuel cell including at least one cathode, at least one anode, and at least one auxiliary electrode. The auxiliary electrode works in combination with the anode to provide a current as a rechargeable battery while the anode and cathode work in combination to provide an electrical current as a fuel cell. The cathode and the auxiliary electrode may operate alone or in tandem to provide an electrical current.

Drive system incorporating a hybrid fuel cell

A hybrid fuel cell/battery including at least one cathode, at least one anode, and at least one auxiliary electrode. A fuel cell utilizing parallel flow of a hydrogen stream, an oxygen stream, and an electrolyte solution with respect to the electrodes, while maintaining mechanical support within the fuel cell. The fuel cell utilizes electrode assemblies having a frame overmolded around the electrode to maintain a flow rates and low pressure throughout the fuel cell. The fuel cell is also designed to maintain mechanical support within the fuel cell while the electrodes expand and contract in response to the absorption of oxygen and hydrogen.

A steering input device for a steer-by-wire system is provided. The input device comprises a first shaft and a hand wheel. The first shaft is rotatably installed in a first housing. The hand wheel is connected to the first shaft such that the hand wheel and the first shaft drive one another. The hand wheel has a range of motion of between about &#xb1;45 degrees and about &#xb1;90 degrees. The hand wheel also has an outer dimension of about 12 inches. The range of motion and the outer dimension allow the steering input device to be installed in a vehicle in a non-conventional position relative to a twentieth century conventional position including at least one of the hand wheel extending from the first shaft extending along a length defining the vehicle on one of two sides thereof and the hand weel extending rearward in the vehicle farther than an instrument panel.

Steering input devices for steer-by-wire systems

A fuel cell utilizing parallel flow of a hydrogen stream, an oxygen stream, and an electrolyte solution with respect to the electrodes, while maintaining mechanical support within the fuel cell. The fuel cell contains multiple layers of electrodes which absorb and react hydrogen and oxygen. The fuel cell is designed to maintain mechanical support within the fuel cell while the electrodes expand and contract in response to the absorption of oxygen and hydrogen. The design of the fuel cell provides a substantially more compact design by not requiring space to allow for the expansion and contraction of the electrodes within the fuel cell.

Parallel flow fuel cell

A fuel cell utilizing parallel flow of a hydrogen stream, an oxygen stream, and an electrolyte solution with respect to the electrodes, while maintaining mechanical support within the fuel cell. The fuel cell utilizes encapsulated electrodes to maintain a high air flow rate and low pressure throughout the fuel cell. The fuel cell is also designed to maintain mechanical support within the fuel cell while the electrodes expand and contract in response to the absorption of oxygen and hydrogen. Gas is predistributed by the compression plates and electrode plates to supply the electrodes with high concentrations of oxygen from air.

Fuel cell with encapsulated electrodes

A fuel cell utilizing parallel flow of a hydrogen stream, an oxygen stream, and an electrolyte solution with respect to the electrodes, while maintaining mechanical support within the fuel cell. The fuel cell utilizes framed electrodes to maintain a high air flow rate and low pressure throughout the fuel cell. The fuel cell is also designed to maintain mechanical support within the fuel cell while the electrodes expand and contract in response to the absorption of oxygen and hydrogen. Gas is predistributed by the compression plates and frames to supply the electrodes with high concentrations of oxygen from air.

Fuel cell with framed electrodes

&ldquo;An electrically operated power steering apparatus has an electric motor disposed parallel to a rack shaft. The system is designed such that the motor can be installed in any angle around a rack housing of smaller diameter. This permits easy installation and flexibility of design. The apparatus is also designed to accommodate off-the-shelf electric motors that are commercially available so as to eliminate the need to customize an electric motor for each application.&rdquo;

Electric power assisted rack and pinion system

A drive-by wire steering system comprising a steering shaft and a steering wheel return mechanism is provided. The steering shaft comprises a first geared portion and a first end, where the first end is connectable to a vehicle's steering wheel. The steering wheel return mechanism comprises a torsion spring and a second geared portion. The first geared portion and the second geared portion are operatively engaged such that a first angular displacement of the steering shaft about a first axis imparts a second angular displacement about a second axis to the steering wheel return mechanism. The torsion spring is configured to generate a returning torque on the steering wheel return mechanism upon the second angular displacement of the steering wheel return mechanism. The returning torque has a direction opposite the first angular displacement, and is proportional to the second angular displacement.

Drive-by-wire steering systems having steering wheel return mechanism

A drive-by wire steering system is provided. The system comprises a steering shaft and a center feel mechanism. The steering shaft is configured for a first angular displacement about a first axis. The steering shaft has a first geared portion and a first end connectable to a vehicle's steering wheel. The center feel mechanism comprises a cam face, an urging member and a second geared portion. The first geared portion and the second geared portion are operatively engaged such that the first angular displacement of the steering shaft imparts a second angular displacement about a second axis to the center feel mechanism. The cam face and the urging member are configured to generate a retuning torque to the center feel mechanism. The retuning torque has a direction opposite the second angular displacement.

Drive-by-wire steering systems having a center feel mechanism and methods of providing

A drive-by wire steering system is provided. The steering system comprises a steering shaft and a stop mechanism. The steering shaft is configured for a first angular displacement about a first axis. The steering shaft comprises a first geared portion and a first end. The first end is connectable to a vehicle's steering wheel. The stop mechanism comprises a stop portion and a second geared portion. The stop portion defines a first position and a second position. The first geared portion and the second geared portion are operatively engaged such that angular displacement of the steering shaft imparts a second angular displacement about a second axis to the stop mechanism. The first angular displacement is limited when the second angular displacement is such that the steering shaft abuts the stop portion at either the first position or the second position.

Drive-by wire steering systems having a stop mechanism

A steering gear system for an electric power steering system includes a motor, a gearing mechanism driven by the motor, a drive gear in mechanical communication with the gearing mechanism, a ball nut driven by the drive gear, and a rack laterally positioned through the ball nut and configured to translate the ball nut upon rotation thereof. The gearing mechanism includes a pinion and a sub-pinion in mechanical communication with each other held together but urged apart by a resilient member disposed therebetween. The pinion is urged away from a rotor shaft of the motor by at least one spring to compensate for angular motion of the pinion on the rotor shaft. Helical gear threads disposed on the pinion and sub-pinion are configured to engage corresponding threads on the drive gear. The resilient member forces the flanks of the threads on the pinion and the sub-pinion to remain in contact with corresponding threads on the drive gear regardless of the direction of rotation of the pinion/sub-pinion assembly.
