A core winding a web of deformable material which is thicker along its margins, particularly knurl-edged webs. The core includes a rigid cylindrical member and a deformable cover supported by the rigid member. First and second detachable end members are adapted for attachment to the ends of the rigid member. The hardness of the end members is harder than the deformable cover such that the knurled margins overlay the end members.

A core for winding a web of deformable material which is thicker along its margins, particularly knurl-edged webs. The core includes a rigid cylindrical member (24) and a deformable cover (26) supported by the rigid member. First and second detachable end members (18,20) are adapted for attachment to the ends of the rigid member. The hardness of the end members is harder than the deformable cover such that the knurled margins overlay the end members.

Webs are provided with edge knurls whose effective height varies along the length of the web in a predetermined manner.

Apparatus and method for variably knurling edges of web and product

In the winding of webs of plastic films on cores, defects in the web caused by hard streaks in the wound roll are avoided or reduced by a new method of control. In this method, measurements are made of elastic properties of the web and of the average widthwise thickness distribution of the web. From these values, from measured properties of the core, and from selected initial winding conditions, including web tension, edge thickness and web oscillation, a predicted value of the combined imperfection severity function is determined. This value is compared with a pre-established tolerance; if it is outside the tolerance, winding conditions are adjusted to minimize the predicted web defects.

Method for eliminating imperfections in a wound web roll

A core for winding a web of deformable material, such as photographic film base, which has knurlings along its margins. The core includes a rigid cylindrical member with a sleeve of resilient material. The sleeve has a cylindrical outer surface and has a length less than the distance between the margins containing the knurlings. There are means contiguous with the ends of the sleeves for providing cylindrical surfaces having diameters substantially equal to that of the sleeve. These means underlie the knurlings in the web when the web is wound on the core and may take the form of resilient material which is harder than the sleeve, or they may be rigid. In the latter case the surface-providing means may be integral with the rigid cylindrical member.

A protective web is releasably laminated to an adhesive-coated stretchable web by continuously drawing the webs at differential degrees of tensile strain into laminating contact in the nip formed by a resilient and a non-resilient roller.
