An apparatus for securing a tool to a hangtag is provided. A method for securing the tool is also provided. In one embodiment, the invention pertains to a hangtag assembly that includes a fastening mechanism for securing a tool having a shank portion, such as a socket driver. The hangtag has a body portion, and a hanging mechanism connected to the body portion. The hangtag also has a tool fastening mechanism for securely attaching a tool to the hangtag. The tool fastening mechanism includes one or more pairs of through-openings, and one or more ties, wherein each tie is wove around the shank of the tool and through a respective pair of through-openings. In another embodiment, the invention pertains to a hangtag assembly that includes a fastening mechanism for securing a circular tool having a centrally located hub portion defining an opening therethrough. The hangtag has a body portion with a plurality of apertures therethrough and a tool fastening mechanism for securely attaching a tool to the hangtag. The tool fastening mechanism includes one or more pairs of openings therethrough. One or more ties, may be woven through the openings of the fastening mechanism, the opening of the tool, and the apertures of the body.

An apparatus for locking the head of a hand tool to the handle of the tool. The apparatus generally includes a tapered handle with one or more groove cut into the handle at the tool end of the handle. The grooves are then filled with a compressible material. The head of the tool (such as a pick axe, a hammer, an axe, etc.) is then placed over handle and moved over the grooves to the end. The compressible material will lock the head into place, fixing a longstanding problem with hand tools of the heads coming loose.

An adjustable safety utility knife includes a elongated ergonomically shaped handle formed of two elongate shell members each having a peripheral edge and an outer, generally convex surface and an inner generally concave surface. A fastener secures the shell members together at their peripheral edges along a parting plane to form an elongated internal cavity. The handle defines a front end, back end and an intermediate portion suitable for being gripped by a user and also defines top and bottom surfaces extending along opposite sides of the shell members along the peripheral edges. The handle has a slot-like aperture at the front end substantially aligned with the parting plane and dimensioned for passage of a flat cutting blade therethrough. The cutting blade is mounted for movement by a suitable guide member or a carriage between a first position for safely storing the blade fully inside the cavity and a second position for selectively extending the blade beyond the aperture to expose at least a portion thereof. A manually operated button is arranged on the top surface of the handle and is coupled to guide element or blade carriage for selectively moving the blade between the first and second positions. Slip resistant elements are secured to the shell members along the top and bottom surface between a rearwardmost operative position of the manually operated button and the back end of the handle. The slip resistant elements generally conform to the outer convex surface of the handle and enhance gripping of the handle and minimize slippage thereof during use of the utility knife when gripped by a user.

A shingle removal tool includes a cutting head attached to a handle, the cutting head having a flat leading portion on which a series of nail engaging slots are formed creating a series of sharp tapered cutting edges at a leading end and a fulcrum edge at a trailing edge. An intermediate portion integrally connects the flat leading portion with the handle. The intermediate portion is curved preferably in the form of an arc of a circle to provide a concave inner surface that imparts a curvature to the lifted shingles and propels them in the direction of advancement of the tool and away from the user. A nail removing opening is provided on the intermediate portion so that larger nails can be removed by lifting the handle which smaller nails can be sheared off by the cutting edges or lifted by the engaging slots by lowering the handle. The tool is ergonomicaly dimensioned to facilitate use by users of average height with confortable and limited movements to increase efficiency of use and to minimize fatigue.

The handle has a slot-like aperture at the front end substantially aligned with the parting plane and dimensioned for passage of a flat cutting blade therethrough. A guide element within the elongated cavity guides the cutting blade between a first position for safely storing the blade fully inside the cavity and a second position for selectively extending the blade beyond the aperture to expose at least a portion thereof. A manually operated button is arranged on the top surface and coupled to the guide element for selectively moving the blade between the first and second positions. The guide element includes a carriage within the elongated internal cavity for supporting a flat cutting blade and guide elements on at least one of the inner generally concave surfaces for guiding the carriage and cutting blade carried thereby between the first and second positions. The carriage includes a locking element for normally locking a cutting blade mounted thereon to substantially fix the cutting blade against relative longitudinal movements between the cutting blade and carriage. The locking element includes an unlocking element the actuation of which releases the cutting blade to permit relative longitudinal movements between the cutting blade and the carriage. A blade release element on one of the shell members actuates the unlocking element when manual force is applied thereto, whereby application of a force on the release element releases the cutting blade and enables it to be withdrawn through the front end aperture.

The handle has a rear opening at the back end for providing access to the elongated internal cavity. A carrier frame has a blade cartridge receiving compartment and dimensioned to be removably receivable within the cavity through the rear opening between a retracted position in which the carrier frame is fully stored within the internal cavity of the handle end and an extended position in which the carrier frame is at least partially moved exteriorly of the back end to provide access of the cartridge receiving compartment. A blade cartridge for storing a plurality of flat cutting blades is receivable within the blade cartridge receiving compartment.

A spring-loaded tape cartridge in a tape measure housing includes a coilable tape rotatably mounted to position a free end of the tape to pass through an opening in the housing. The tape cartridge is biased to retract the tape into the compartment when the free end is pulled out of the housing to perform a measurement. A stop tab at the free end engages the workpiece and assures that the free end remains outside housing and available for gripping. An internal spring portion acts between the housing and the tape cartridge for applying a substantially constant frictional force on the tape cartridge. A second spring portion is provided for selectively applying increased and decreased frictional forces on the tape cartridge to supplement the substantially constant frictional forces. A locking member is provided for selectively applying a substantially normal pressure to the tape transverse to the movement path to positively lock the tape against the housing and prevent the tape from moving relative to the housing. A finger-actuated control or rocking button actuates the second friction-producing spring to decrease frictional forces in the releasing position, maintaining the locking member disengaged from the tape, urging the locking member into contact with the tape and actuating the second friction-producing spring portion to increase the frictional forces in the locking position, and to apply intermediate frictional forces on the cartridge while maintaining the locking member disengaged from the tape in the neutral position of the control or rocking button.

An improved utility bar includes an elongate shank which has a longitudinal axis, a prying hook at one end and a prying chisel at the other end. The prying hook has a tapered portion extending along a direction generally an angle &agr; with the longitudinal axis and a generally U-shaped portion integrally formed with the shank and the tapered portion. The tapered and U-shaped portions together form a prying footprint surface facing a direction away from the shank. The angle &agr; is selected to be greater than 90&deg; and preferably selected within the range of 93&deg;-110&deg;. The prying footprint has a minimum transverse dimension which is substantially greater than the minimum cross sectional dimension of the shank.
