A method includes receiving, before a first time, a plurality of sensor values and identifying, based on the plurality of sensor values, a target vehicle in a blind zone of a host vehicle. The method also includes determining, at the first time, that the host vehicle is initiating a steering maneuver and identifying a plurality of time segments between the first time and a second time. The method also includes updating the plurality of sensor values and determining a heading angle of the target vehicle relative to the host vehicle. The method also includes estimating a position of the target vehicle at each time segment of the plurality of time segments and estimating, using each position of the target vehicle at each corresponding time segment of the plurality of time segments, a position of the target vehicle at the second time.

Systems and methods for active blind zone assist

A method includes identifying at least a portion of a surface that has a coefficient of friction that is less than a coefficient of friction threshold. The method also incudes determining whether a vehicle speed is greater than a vehicle speed threshold, and determining whether an operator of the vehicle is engaging a handwheel of the vehicle. The method also includes, generating a first alert signal, selectively adjusting at least one steering characteristic of a steering system of the vehicle from a first value to a second value, and, in response to at least one of a reduction in the vehicle speed and a distance between the vehicle and the portion of the surface having the coefficient of friction being less than a distance threshold, selectively adjusting the at least one steering characteristic from the second value to the first value.

An emergency steering system for a vehicle includes a memory including instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: receive information corresponding to an environment external to the vehicle; identify an obstacle in the environment external to the vehicle using the information; determine a distance between the vehicle and the obstacle; determine whether a collision is imminent; in response to determining that a collision is imminent, determine whether the vehicle can move within a lane of travel to avoid the collision; in response to determining that the vehicle can move within the lane of travel to avoid the collision, determine a trajectory of travel for the vehicle; generate a steering assist angle command based on the trajectory of travel; and control position of a steering mechanism of the vehicle using the steering assist angle command and a measured steering angle.

System and method for shared control for emergency steering

Embodiments for assisting steering of a vehicle responsive to detecting an object in a proximity of a vehicle are described. Embodiments described include: receiving an image of a lane indicator corresponding to a lane of travel of the vehicle from an image capturing device; determining, based on the image, reference values corresponding to a position of the lane indicator relative to the vehicle; associating each of the reference values to values used to locate a point within a reference frame related to a direction the vehicle is traveling; receiving position information of an object in an environment external to the vehicle from a radar sensor; determining, based on the values and the position information, an assigned lane of the object; detecting an impending change of the lane of travel of the vehicle to the assigned lane of the object; generating a steering control value based on the impending change.

Systems and methods for obstacle proximity detection

Technical features of a steering system include a control module that dynamically determines an operating mode based on a set of input signal values such as lateral acceleration signal values and corresponding handwheel position values. The control module dynamically determines and learns classification boundaries between multiple operating modes based the input signal values. The control module further calibrates the steering system according to operating mode that is determined using the classification boundaries.

The method generates a base torque command based on a hand wheel torque signal without altering the hand wheel torque signal at a range of relatively low frequencies. The method generates a motor inertia compensation command based on a motor inertia of a motor of the power steering system. The method generates an assist torque command based on the base torque command and the motor inertia compensation command. The method operates a motor of the power steering system to generate a torque based on the assist torque command.

A steering system for detecting a hand wheel position is provided and includes an input shaft connected to a hand wheel, a main gear disposed around the input shaft, a puck gear meshingly engaged with the main gear, and a control module. The control module receives an angular main position of the main gear and an angular puck position of the puck gear. The control module includes a rotational calculation module for calculating the hand wheel position based on at least the angular main position and the angular puck position.
