A door latch operator mount comprises a coupling member and a bearing member. The coupling member includes a plurality radial flanges and an integral resilient arcuate tab member projecting angularly outwardly of the outer surface of the coupling member. The coupling member is mounted to a door for receiving the bearing member. The bearing member has an opening for rotatably receiving a shaft of the latch operator. The bearing member also includes a plurality of flanges and an arcuate channel which tapers in depth. When the bearing member is positioned against the coupling member, the distance of the bearing member flanges from the surface of the coupling member is less than the distance of the coupling member flanges form the surface. The tab member is received in the deeper portion of the arcuate channel. Upon relative rotation, a shoulder on the tab member seats in a notch in the shallower portion of the channel and the bearing member flanges are positioned between the surface of the coupling member and the coupling member flanges. The tab member is urged inward creating a force biasing the bearing member outwardly away from the coupling member and forcing the respective flanges against one another. The bearing member is thus secured to the coupling member and the latch operator is mounted to the door for operative connection to a latch retraction mechanism. A tool is provided for releasably engaging the bearing member enabling rotation of the bearing member relative to the coupling member.

Door latch operator mount

A mortise lock for a door is provided, including an automatic deadbolt mechanism for automatic projection of a deadbolt mounted in the lock housing form a retracted to an extended position upon closing of the door. The automatic deadbolt projecting mechanism for use in the mortise lock comprises a blocking element adapted to be pivotally mounted in the housing for movement relative to the housing between a first position where a blocking surface is adapted to engage the deadbolt for holding the deadbolt in the retracted position against the force of a deadbolt biasing means and a second position where the blocking surface does not engage the deadbolt. The blocking element is pivoted to the second position upon door closing by operation of internal, pivoting lock components, including a sensor adapted to be mounted in the housing for movement relative to the housing between an extended position and a retracted position. The sensor is adapted to contact a strike plate or door frame upon closing of the door for movement to the retracted position triggering automatically deadbolt projection to the extended position under the force of the deadbolt biasing means when.

Mortise lock with automatic deadbolt

A mortise lock is provided including a housing for a latch bolt and a deadbolt which are mounted in the housing for movement between a retracted position where the latch bolt and deadbolt are inside the housing and an extended position where a portion of the latch bolt and deadbolt extend from the housing. A key-operated cylinder in the housing operates to move the deadbolt between the retracted and extended positions. A latch operator is also provided for retracting both the latch bolt and the deadbolt. A moveable blocking element in the housing prevents movement of the latch operator in one position of the blocking element. A locking lever operatively connects the deadbolt and the blocking element so that when the deadbolt is extended the blocking element is automatically moved to the position blocking the latch operator. The locking lever comprises an arm member integral with the locking lever. A latch lever operatively connects the key-operated cylinder and the arm member of the locking lever when the blocking element is in the blocking position for moving the blocking element out of the blocking position by operation of the key-operated cylinder.

Mortise lock

A reversible mortise lock comprises a latch bolt which is removable from the housing for ease of reversal. A securing member is disposed inside the lock housing for releasbly holding the latch bolt in the housing. The securing member includes a securing element having a blocking surface biased into engagement with the latch bolt for securing the latch bolt to the securing member. The securing element has a surface accessible from outside the lock housing which when pressed releases the latch bolt from the securing member. Once the latch bolt is freed, the latch bolt can be completely removed from the lock housing, reversed and reinstalled. This releasing surface is only accessible through the side walls of the lock housing. Therefore, latch bolt reversal must be performed before the lock is installed in a door. Once the lock is installed, the latch bolt cannot be reversed because the latch bolt cannot be removed from the lock. A locking mechanism for use in the lock comprises a blocking element in the housing and a toggle for manually moving the blocking element between a locked position and an unlocked position relative to a latch operator. A stop is removably attached to the blocking element and adapted in the locked position to prevent operation of the outside latch operator. The stop is also accessible through the side walls of the lock housing and positioning of the stop in the blocking element is accomplished before installation. Preferably, the stop is a threaded plug which is received in a threaded opening in the blocking element. Thus, a screw driver is the only tool needed to release the latch bolt from the lock housing for reversal of the latch bolt and locking mechanism.

Reversible mortise lock

A door closer (20) is attachable to a door (24) and is formed with a chamber (44) in which a piston element (50) is movable to move fluid from the chamber to a reservoir (82) upon opening of the door. After the door (24) has been opened to a position, for example, of sixty to seventy-five degrees, continued opening of the door causes the fluid to be compressed within the chamber (44) and to be directed only through a back check valve (95) to the reservoir (82). This results in the development of an adjustable 'back check' condition to provide a counterforce to the continued opening of the door. The adjustable valve (95) includes a spring biased ball (144), the biasing of which must be overcome by the force of the fluid being compressed in the chamber (44) to allow for fluid to pass through the valve to the reservoir (82). The chamber (44) is formed partially by a spring tube (38) having slots (192) formed in the interior wall thereof which extends radially beyond convolutions of spring (52) contained within the tube. The slots (192) allow the fluid, and gas bubbles entrapped therein, to be moved beyond the convolutions of the spring (52) and to be moved unimpeded into the reservoir (82). Otherwise, the gas bubbles would be trapped in the chamber (44) and would deleteriously affect the operation of the door closer (20).

Door closer

A door closer (20) is attachable to a door (24) and includes a cylinder (36) which forms a chamber (44) in which a piston element (50) is movable to move fluid from the chamber to a reservoir (82) upon opening of the door. After the door (24) has been opened to a position, for example, of ninety-five to one hundred degrees, continued opening of the door causes the fluid to be compressed within the chamber (44) and to be directed only through a back check valve (95) to the reservoir (82). This results in the development of an adjustable 'back check' condition to provide a counterforce to the continued opening of the door. A passageway (150) is formed in cylinder (36) to allow fluid to flow relatively freely from chamber (44) to reservoir (82) until an inward end (56) of piston element (50) has travelled a prescribed distance 'x.' This prescribed distance of travel represents the opening of door (24) to ninety-five to one hundred degrees from the door's normally closed position.

A door closer having a housing defining a fluid containing chamber and a fluid reservoir and including a piston supported in the chamber for movement in one and an opposite direction in response to respective opening and closing movements of a door. A first fluid passageway defined by the housing provides communication between the chamber and the reservoir for the free passage of fluid from the chamber to the reservoir in response to initial movement of the piston in the one direction. A second fluid passageway spaced in the one direction from the first fluid passageway contains a ball check valve spring biased to closed position for resisting the flow of fluid from the chamber through the second passageway to the reservoir. The valve is threadably adjustable relative to the housing to regulate the resistance to fluid flow. A third fluid passageway spaced from the first passageway and disposed in bypassing relation to the second fluid passageway includes an adjustable metering orifice and provides a free flow path from the chamber to the reservoir. The size of the metering orifice is also adjusted by threadably adjusting the valve relative to the housing.

A door closer (20) is attachable to a door (24) and is formed with a chamber (44) in which a piston element (50) is movable to move fluid from the chamber to a reservoir (82) upon opening of the door. The chamber (44) is formed partially by a spring tube (38) having slots (192) formed in the interior wall thereof which extend radially beyond convolutions of spring (52) contained within the tube. The slots (192) allow the fluid, and gas bubbles entrapped therein, to be moved beyond the convolutions of the spring (52) and to be moved unimpeded into the reservoir (82). Otherwise, the gas bubbles would be trapped in the chamber (44) and would deleteriously affect the operation of the door closer (20).

Fluid door closer with means to permit entrapped gases to move

An arm for a door closer includes a shaft rotatable about a first axis. The arm includes a first arm member having a first end connected to the shaft and rotatable therewith. A second arm member has a first end pivotably connected to a second end of the first arm member and a second end pivotably connected to a mounting bracket. The second arm member includes an open ended axially movable housing member having radially inwardly extending detent. A clamp has a first end forming the first end of the second arm and a second and forming radially expandable jaws of the clamp. The detent on the housing when disposed in a first axial position maintains the jaws in a closed position and when moved to a second axial position permits the jaws to radially expand. A link has a first end forming the second end of the second arm and a second end. A joining member is connected to the second end of the link and extends towards the clamp. The joining member is held in a fixed position by the jaws when the jaws are closed and is axially movable relative to the clamp when the jaws are radially expanded.
