A method of making a supported gas separation molecular sieve membrane. In this method a porous support, which is preferably pretreated, is contacted with a molecular sieve synthesis mixture under hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The contacting step is conducted for a shortened crystallization time period. The resulting coated porous support is calcined to yield the supported gas separation molecular sieve membrane having particularly good gas separation characteristics.

Disclosed is a process for separating an acidic contaminant and light hydrocarbon of a light hydrocarbon feed having a large contaminating acidic contaminant content. The invention concerns a process for the removal of gaseous acidic contaminants, especially carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulphide, in two or more stages from a gaseous hydrocarbonaceous feedstream () comprising hydrocarbons and said acidic contaminants, using one or more membranes in each separation stages. The gaseous hydrocarbonaceous feedstream is especially a natural gas stream. The process is especially suitable for feedstreams comprising very high amounts of acidic contaminants, especially carbon dioxide, e.g. more than 25 vol. %, or even more than 45 vol. %. In a first stage () a pure or almost pure stream of acidic contaminants is separated from the feedstream, the acidic contaminants () stream suitably containing less than 5 vol % of hydrocarbons. The remaining stream () comprises the hydrocarbons and still a certain amount of gaseous acidic contaminants. In a second stage () a pure or almost pure stream of hydrocarbons () is separated from the remaining stream, where after the then remaining stream () is combined with the feed for the first stage (), the hydrocarbon stream suitably containing less than 5 vol % of acidic contaminants.

A method of producing methane is described. The method includes providing formation fluid from a subsurface in situ conversion process. The formation fluid is separated to produce a liquid stream and a first gas stream. The first gas stream includes olefins. At least the olefins in the first gas stream are contacted with a hydrogen source in the presence of one or more catalysts and steam to produce a second gas stream. The second gas stream is contacted with a hydrogen source in the presence of one or more additional catalysts to produce a third gas stream. The third gas stream includes methane.

The present invention is an improvement upon the process for the production of 1,3-propanediol (PDO) wherein an aqueous solution of 3-hydroxypropanal (HPA) is formed, and the HPA is subjected to hydrogenation to produce a crude PDO mixture comprising PDO, water, MW176 acetal, and high and low volatility materials, wherein the crude PDO mixture is dried to produce a first overhead stream comprising water and some high volatility materials and a dried crude PDO mixture as a first distillate bottoms stream comprising PDO, MW176 acetal, and low volatility materials, and wherein the dried crude PDO mixture is distilled to produce a second overhead stream comprising some high volatility materials, a middle stream comprising PDO and MW176 acetal, and a second distillate bottoms stream comprising PDO and low volatility materials. The improvement on this process comprises treating the crude PDO mixture and/or the dried crude PDO mixture and/or the PDO product with an acidic zeolite, an acid form cation exchange resin, or a soluble acid to convert the MW176 cyclic acetal to more volatile materials which can be easily separated from PDO by distillation.

Disclosed is an integrated process for producing 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylicacid comprising oxidizing a methylnaphthalene feedstock, hydrodebrominating the crude naphthoic acid product under conditions different from any work known in the art, forming a potassium salt of the acid; disproportionating the potassium salt to produce 2,6 potassium salts of NDA; selectively precipitating K NDA; selectively precipitating the monopotassium salt of 2,6 NDA(KHNDA); disproportionating the KHNDA into 2,6 NDA and K2NDA; further reacting the 2,6 NDA in a pipe reactor; and drying the product 2,6 NDA by conventional means or directly slurrying directly into a PEN process. The process can tolerate impurities in the economical methylnaphthalene feed and the resulting 2,6 NDA is of high quality with <50 ppm potassium.

This invention relates to a gel-free process for making hydrogenated functionalized polymers that mitigates the problem of ionic gel. When multi-alkali metal initiators are used to make these polymers anionically, the process comprises anionically polymerizing at least one monomer with a multi-alkali metal initiator, usually a lithium alkyl, in a hydrocarbon solvent, capping the polymer by adding to the polymer a capping agent that reacts with the ends of the polymer chains such that strongly associating chain ends are formed wherein a strongly associating polymer gel is formed, adding a trialkyl aluminum compound to the polymer gel, whereby the gel dissipates, optionally terminating the polymerization by addition of an alcohol, washing the polymer with aqueous acid, preferably aqueous mineral acid, most preferably phosphoric acid, wherein there is at least one mole of phosphoric acid per mole of alkali metal and at least three moles of phosphoric acid per mole of aluminum, and hydrogenating the polymer with a hydrogenation catalyst. In a second embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for making such polymers which comprises anionically polymerizing them as described and adding a trialkyl aluminum compound prior to the addition of the functionalizing agent and washing the product prior to hydrogenation as described above. In the first embodiment, a gel is formed and then removed. In the second embodiment, the gel never is formed because of the presence of the trialkyl aluminum compound.
