A method for marking a petroleum hydrocarbon or a liquid biologically derived fuel; said method comprising adding to said petroleum hydrocarbon or liquid biologically derived fuel at least one compound that is a R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, Rand R-substituted diaryl ether, wherein R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, Rand Rindependently are hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy; wherein each compound having formula (I) is present at a level from 0.01 ppm to 20 ppm.

Xanthenes as fuel markers

The present invention provides aqueous polymer compositions containing one or more, or, preferably, two or more markers selected from a C-Calkyl phenyl ether having a formula Ph(R)(OR), wherein Ph is an aromatic ring containing group having from six to nine carbon atoms, Ris a C-Calkyl group, Ris a C-Calkyl group, m is an integer of from 0 to 5, n is an integer of from 1 to 3, and (m+n) is an integer of from 1 to 6. The markers are readily detectable, such as by mass spectroscopy, upon solvent extraction and separation from the aqueous polymer compositions, or from dried or cured coatings, film or layers thereof.

Markers for aqueous compositions

The present invention provides aqueous polymer compositions containing one or more, or, preferably, two or more triphenylmethyl alkyl aryl ether markers having a formula (PhC)Ar(OR), wherein Ph is a phenyl group, Ar is an aromatic ring containing group having from six to twenty carbon atoms, R is a C-Calkyl group, m is an integer of from 1 to 2, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4. The markers are readily detectable, such as by mass spectroscopy, upon solvent extraction and separation from the aqueous polymer compositions, or from dried or cured coatings, film or layers thereof.
