A phototherapy apparatus is disclosed including: a body member; a plurality of elongated light transmitting elements, each of the elements extending between a proximal end enclosed within the body member and a distal end located outside of and distal to the body member; where the tips of the proximal ends of the light transmitting elements are located in close proximity to each other; and an optical connector configured to detachably receive an end of a lightguide and to couple light delivered by the lightguide from a source into the light transmitting elements at the proximal ends. The light coupled into each of the light transmitting elements is transmitted along the element and emitted from the distal end.

A phototherapy apparatus for the treatment of skin disease is disclosed including: an at least partially hollow body element; a plurality of light emitting elements enclosed within the body element; and a plurality of elongated light transmitting elements, each of the light transmitting elements having a proximal end detachably affixed to the body element in proximity to one or more of the light emitting elements, and extending to an end distal the body element. For each of the elongated light transmitting elements, at least a portion of light incident from the light emitting elements onto the proximal end is directed through the light transmitting element and emitted from the distal end.

A phototherapy apparatus is disclosed including: a handpiece including a body member and a grip; a plurality of elongated light transmitting elements, each of the elements extending between a proximal end enclosed within the body member and a distal end located outside of and distal to the body member; an ultraviolet light source; a light collection element; and one or more optical coupling elements. The proximal ends of the light transmitting elements are located in close proximity to each other The light collection element is configured to collect at least a portion of the light emitted from the light source. The one or more optical coupling elements are configured to direct at least a portion of the collected light to the proximal ends of the light transmitting elements to couple at least portion of the collected light into the light transmitting elements The light coupled into each of the light transmitting elements is transmitted along the element and emitted from the distal end.

Light source and fiber optic brush for light delivery

A luminaire for use during a medical procedure utilizes a single optic fiber for providing a beam of light having an initial beam width and an initial beam energy. The width of the beam is adjustable without substantially decreasing the beam energy, and the beam of adjusted width can be directed onto a surgical field. A headband for mounting a luminaire is formed of a perspiration-absorbent cloth strip, has hook-and-clasp engagement, and includes a luminaire mount.

Surgical luminaire

A gradient index (GRIN) lens couples light from a single fiber optic into a fiber bundle or directly into the input port of an illumination device, such as a medical illumination device. The single fiber optic provides a high intensity beam of light having a high NA. An entry face of the GRIN lens is positioned adjacent to an exit aperture of the fiber within the near field of the fiber and thereby receives a beam having a substantially uniform cross-section, rather than a Gaussian cross-section as would occur with the GRIN lens positioned in the far field of the fiber. An exit face of the GRIN lens is positioned adjacent to the fiber bundle or input port of the illumination device. As such, the GRIN lens effectively images the exit aperture of the fiber of the input aperture of the fiber bundle as input port. The optical characteristics of the GRIN lens, including its length and radial variation in index of refraction, are selected to reduce the NA of light output from the fiber to a value appropriate for use with the illumination device. An optical coupler employing the GRIN lens is described as well as an entire optical system including a source of light, a off-axis coupler for coupling light into the fiber, a gradient index lens, and an endoscope. A mechanical housing for holding the single fiber and GRIN lens and for facilitating connection to a fiber bundle or input port is also described.

Singular fiber to bundle illumination with optical coupler

The present invention provides a variable attenuator for an optical transmission system having a disc-like masking plate with apertures (or image zones) formed in an arcuate control area at the periphery of the plate. Within each aperture, at least one opaque masking member is provided extending outward from the origin to the perimeter of the aperture and having a masking surface with an incremental masking area which continuously increases in magnitude with increasing radial length of the aperture. The perpendicular cross-section of each masking member with respect to the optical axis preferably forms a geometric shape having straight-line edges extending radially outward from the origin of the aperture. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of masking members are utilized (as a pair or sets of pairs). The disc-like masking plate is inserted perpendicularly into the path of the light beam such that the optical axis of the light beam defines a movement axis about the periphery of the masking plate upon which the origin of each aperture is placed. In this manner, rotation of the masking plate around its center provides discrete levels of attenuation of the light beam as successive apertures are placed in the path of the light beam. Several alternate embodiment enable gradual adjustment of the level of attenuation using a plurality of masking plates each having a single aperture with at least one masking member disposed therein. In these embodiments, the masking plates are disposed perpendicularly at predetermined intervals along the optical axis of the light beam and are independently rotated about the optical axis so as to vary the total masked area of the light beam's spot image by overlapping of the masking members.

Light intensity attenuator for optical transmission systems

The present invention provides a compact surgical headlamp capable of dynamic adjustment of the resulting field of illumination, comprising at least a single core fiber optic delivery light guide, an adjustable light projection system, and a mounting mechanism for movably supporting the headlamp proximate to the surgeon's eyes. A receiving block is also provided for supporting the structure of the projection system and for coupling the delivery fiber thereto. The projection system comprises a cylindrical housing mount adapted with a centrally disposed cylindrical cavity for receiving the ferruled, output end of the delivery fiber and for allowing the light output therefrom to initially diverge within the cavity of the housing mount. An outside surface of the housing mount is threaded for screwable reception of a correspondingly threaded, cylindrical lens housing, with a field lens disposed at a distal end of the lens housing such that the lens is movable back and forth along the optical axis of the delivery fiber by screwing the lens housing on and off of the housing mount. The enclosed cavity collects the more divergent light rays and redirects them toward the output endface of the lens so as to produce a concentrated light beam which defines a smaller solid angle of divergence. As a result, a brighter field of illumination is achieved through movement of the lens towards the protracted position where the illuminated field is made smaller. The mounting mechanism comprises a ball and socket joint coupled at one end to a lower corner of the receiving block, and at a second end to a bracket which can easily be attached to an annular head mount for detachable insertion of the head mount into a headband worn by a surgeon.
