A method is provided for a telephone subscriber to distinguish between callers. The method is accomplished by storing a pass code for a subscriber's telephone within a memory of the telephone system. Callers who have been informed of the pass code and who call the subscriber's telephone and enter the pass code receive special treatment. For example, upon the caller calling the subscriber's telephone, a normal ringing pattern is applied to the subscriber's telephone while a ring back signal is returned to the caller. Upon the caller entering the pass code, a special ringing pattern is applied to the subscriber's telephone. The special ringing pattern is different than the normal ringing pattern and thus indicates to a subscriber of the subscriber's telephone, even before the telephone is answered, that the caller is one of a select group of callers to whom the subscriber has shared the pass code.

Caller discrimination within a telephone system

A method for responding to a call to a called associated with a private branch exchange ('PBX') which is connected to a central office ('CO') by direct inward dial ('DID') trunks, which PBX is connected to a messaging system, the method includes the steps of: (a) responding to the call from the calling party and receiving the called address information; (b) determining whether to forward the call to the messaging system; (c) forwarding the call to the messaging system and transmitting the address information to the messaging system over a line; (d) detecting whether loop current is present or absent from the line after a predetermined interval; (e) if loop current is present, transmitting an answer signal to the CO, and (f) if loop current is absent, transmitting an identifying tone to the CO.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for dedicating one or more second lines interconnecting a public/private communication system (PCS), such as a Private Branch Exchange (PBX), and a Voice Mail System (VMS) for only providing message notification to communication devices of recipients of voicemail messages via the PCS. A plurality of analog first lines in a hunt group between the PCS and the VMS permit voice communications between callers and the VMS via the PCS. The VMS includes an applications processor which is integrated (coupled) to the PCS. The applications processor determines if a second line to be used only for message notification is part of the plurality of analog first lines in the hunt group. If the second line is part of the plurality of analog first lines, the applications processor accesses the PCS over the second line, and causes the second line to be made inaccessible to the public/private communication system for transmitting incoming calls to the Voice Mail System. When a second line is not part of the plurality of analog first lines, the applications processor accesses the PCS, and causes all incoming calls that are directed to the VMS over this second line to be forwarded to the plurality of analog first lines.

Technique for reducing message notification blockage in voice mail

Method and apparatus are disclosed for initiating multiple call transfers from a Voice Mail System ('VMS') to telephone extensions on a Private Branch Exchange ('PBX') integrated with the VMS. A plurality of first lines between the PBX and the VMS provide voice communication between callers and the VMS via the PBX. The VMS includes an applications processor which is integrated (coupled) to the PBX via an integration link. The applications processor determines if at least one of a plurality of second lines in a hunt group are free, and transmits a command to the PBX to effect a call transfer to an extension on the PBX if at least one second line is found free. If no second line is found free, the applications processor places the transfer request in a queue. The plurality of second lines in the hunt group are searched in response to the PBX receiving the special command over the integration link to find a free second line. This second line is used to connect the applications processor to the PBX to complete the call transfer to a particular extension. Once a caller requesting a transfer is connected to the desired extension, the second line is released for use on another call transfer request or a queued transfer request. Concurrently, other call transfers at different stages of transfer are capable of being handled via other ones of the second lines.
