A multi-function tool is connected to an inner string to selectively align a port or ports in the inner string with ports in the outer string at various locations. The tool is locked from functioning at some locations where a locating collet will not selectively engage with an unlocking profile. In this more the tool will pass through the location unhindered. If an unlock profile is engaged the tool is enabled to be unlocked so that manipulation allows a support mandrel to align with collets that have an external V-shaped profile. Setting down weight allows the supported V-shaped profile on the collets engage a similar profile on the outer tubular to rotate, if needed, and to find support on a V-shaped profile on the surrounding tubular for performance of the borehole operation. Thereafter the locating collet engages a locking profile to disable the tool again.

Selective rotationally aligning indicating mechanism

A borehole plug or packer for treating is designed to be flowed back to a surface location after use. When the treatment is concluded pressure from above is relieved or lowered, and well fluid is flowed back, so that the plug or plugs disengages at slips designed to resist differential pressure from above. The application of differential pressure from below causes the lower slips to release one or more of such plugs in the hole into specialized sub surface or surface capture equipment so that well pressure is relieved before removal of the plugs from specialized subsurface or surface capture equipment. Packers or plugs are captured above, below or at a wellhead in a receptacle. Production ensues without milling with the captured plugs or packers in place or removed.

A ball dropping system includes a ball retention feature. The ball retention feature includes an ejection arrangement blocked from activating in a first condition of the ball dropping system, activatable in a second condition of the ball dropping system, and activated to eject a ball from the ball dropping system that is releasably secured by the ball retention feature in a third condition of the ball dropping system. A setting sleeve is movable from a first position to a second position with respect to the ejection arrangement. The setting sleeve has the first position to block the ejection arrangement from activating in the first condition of the ball dropping system. The setting sleeve is movable to the second position to render the ejection arrangement activatable in the second condition of the ball dropping system.

Borehole data transmission method for flowed back borehole plugs with a lower slip assembly or object landed on said plugs

A fracturing tool features spaced releasable packers with an outlet in between. The housing has relatively moving components for opening the frac port between the packers with weight set on the lower packer. Once the frac port is opened the upper packer is set and the pumping begins. The upper packer can be released so that tension can be pulled on the lower packer to close the frac port and open a through passage in the housing. In one embodiment the through passage can be located above the lower packer to a sand jet perforator to clean debris away from the lower packer if it is difficult to release the lower packer or to abrasively perforate through a tubular. The housing outlet can be below bottom packer to perform a treatment further downhole or to operate another tool. The straddle tool can be run in on coiled tubing.

An apparatus for use in a wellbore is disclosed that in one non-limiting embodiment includes a mandrel having a recess on a lower section thereof, a packing element around the mandrel, wherein the packing element provides a seal between the apparatus and the wellbore when the packing element is expanded radially outward from the mandrel; and a threaded member having a threaded outer surface placed around the lower section of the mandrel, and wherein strength of the threaded member is greater than the strength of the lower section of the mandrel. The apparatus may further include a guide member threaded on the threaded member to provide support to the mandrel. The apparatus may be utilized as a frac plug and a bridge plug.

A check valve has a valve member flexibly attached to a seat with resilient members that fold in response to flow above a predetermined value to shut the valve. The flexibly extending members store potential energy that is released to separate the valve member from the seat when the pressure applied against the seated valve member declines to the point that the potential energy stored in the flexible members is able to move the valve member off the seat. The valve assembly including the valve member, the seat and the flexible members can be a common material, or can be all one or more nonmetallic materials or involve composites or other easily drilled materials that are compatible with the operating conditions of pressure differential, temperature and composition of the well fluid. The check valve assembly can be pushed with pressure when closed to operate a subterranean tool.

A device and method for selectively closing and opening a flow path through a sealing element. The device includes second and third tubulars positioned within a bore of a first tubular. A sealing element having a bore is positioned between the second and third tubulars within the bore of the first tubular. The sealing element may be connected to one or both of the tubulars. Bores of the second and third tubulars communicate with the bore of the sealing element to provide a flow path. Movement of the third tubular with respect to the second tubular buckles the sealing element inward to selectively close a portion of the flow path. The third tubular may be moved away from the second tubular to reopen the flow path. The sealing element may engage a structure within the bore of the sealing element to selectively close the flow path through the sealing element.

Inverted element valve

An indicating tool includes a mandrel including a support, an indicator housing surrounding the mandrel, and a member movable radially with respect to the housing. The mandrel is movable longitudinally with respect to the indicator housing, and the indicator housing is at least substantially rotationally locked with respect to the mandrel. The member is engageable with an inner profile of an outer tubular in which the indicating tool is employed, and the member has a substantially helical side. The member is movable radially inward towards the mandrel when the support is longitudinally displaced from the member, and the member is blocked from movement radially inwards when the support is longitudinally aligned with the member.

A seat assembly includes a hollow frustocone; a slip subassembly interactive with the frustocone to anchor the frustocone in place during use. A seal disposed at the frustocone to receive a plug and upon receipt of the plug seal the plug to the frustocone and to a tubular structure in which the frustocone is anchored during use. Self locking plug seat, system and method

A ball is retained behind a circular array of collet fingers to be pushed out through the collets with a spring biased piston that is initially locked when run in the hole. The lock mechanism is a link that holds a potential force in the main spring. One end of the link is held by an acceleration or deceleration responsive retainer. The retainer has a conforming stop surface to a stop surface on the link. Sudden relative movement caused by acceleration of the housing allows the retainer that is flanked by opposed springs to move away from the stop surface or surfaces on the link. The link is an array of spaced fingers that can radially flex. The radial flexing combines with the power of the main spring to propel the piston against the ball for a release of the ball. A fracturing operation then ensues.

A selective locking apparatus for an indicating tool, the selective locking apparatus includes a mandrel having a rotational collet finger receiving area including a plurality of unlocked-position tracks alternatingly arranged with a plurality of locked-position detents. A rotational collet rotatably supported on the mandrel, the rotational collet including a j-track on an outer periphery of the rotational collet, the rotational collet further including a plurality of rotational collet fingers having heads engageable within the rotational collet finger receiving area of the mandrel. An indicating collet supported on the mandrel, the indicating collet including a plurality of indicating collet fingers; and, at least one pin fixedly mounted on the indicating collet for receipt within the j-track of the rotational collet; wherein longitudinal movement of the mandrel with respect to the indicating collet cycles the rotational collet via j-track interaction and selectively places the heads of the rotational collet fingers into either the plurality of unlocked-position tracks or the plurality of locked-position detents. A method of selectively locking an indicating tool.
