A variable flow resistance system for use with a subterranean well includes a first flow path configured to receive a fluid, a sensor configured to measure a property of the fluid received into the first flow path, and an actuator configured to control an inflow rate of the fluid received into the first flow path based upon the property of the fluid measured by the sensor.

Magnetorheological fluids may regulate fluid flow downhole by forming a fluid seal using a bridge plug apparatus. Bridge plug apparatuses employing a magnetorheological fluid may be deployed in a wellbore in a retrievable configuration or in a substantially permanent configuration. Retrievable bridge plug apparatuses may comprise spaced apart magnets having a gap defined therebetween, and a reservoir of magnetorheological fluid housed within the gap. The magnets move laterally with respect to one another to expand or contract the gap and to displace the reservoir of magnetorheological fluid radially with respect to the magnets. Other bridge plug apparatuses may comprise a flow path extending between a reservoir of magnetorheological fluid and the exterior of a housing, where at least a portion of the flow path is located within a gap defined between spaced apart magnets.

The biasing device influences the chamber volume. Another flow control device can include water in a chamber, the chamber having a variable volume, a flow restricting member which displaces in response to a change in the chamber volume, and a biasing device which reduces a boiling point of the water in the chamber.

Because the compositional gradient is smooth, very little or no mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion occurs, which improves a service lifetime of the PDC cutter.

A wellbore isolation device includes a wedge member that defines an outer surface and a barrel seal having a cylindrical body that provides an inner radial surface and an outer radial surface. The inner radial surface is engageable with the outer surface of the wedge member. The barrel seal further includes a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves defined through the body in an alternating configuration at opposing ends of the body. A raised lip protrudes radially from the outer radial surface and circuitously extends about a circumference of the body. A plurality of slip buttons is positioned in a corresponding plurality of holes defined in the outer radial surface of the body. At least one of the wedge member and the barrel seal is made of a degradable material that degrades when exposed to a wellbore environment.

A method of constructing a device for use in a subterranean well can include determining an environmental condition to be experienced by a component of the device in the well, the component being at least one of the group comprising: a) an electrical element which conducts electricity in the well, b) a magnetic element which produces a magnetic field in the well, and c) a substrate which supports an electrical circuit; selecting the component which degrades when exposed to the environmental condition; and incorporating the component into the device.

Degradable devices for use in subterranean wells

A downhole system and method is disclosed for sealing an inflow control device installed in a subterranean formation along a length of production tubing adjacent a productive zone of the subterranean formation. The system includes a truss structure radially expandable between a contracted configuration and an expanded configuration and a sealing structure disposed radially external to the truss structure. The truss structure and the sealing structure are set in their expanded configurations so that the sealing structure is put into engagement with the inflow control device so as to restrict the flow of fluids from the subterranean formation into the production tubing at the location of the inflow control device.

A wellbore isolation device comprising: one or more materials, wherein the one or more materials degrade after contact with a fluid; and a non-metallic coating, wherein the coating covers the one or more materials of the wellbore isolation device, and wherein the coating partially or wholly degrades after contact with a wellbore fluid. A method of removing the wellbore isolation device comprising: degrading the coating via contact with a wellbore fluid; and contacting the portion of the wellbore isolation device with a fluid, wherein the portion of the wellbore isolation device comprises one or more materials that degrade after contact with the fluid.
