Optical communications system using traveling wave semiconductor optical amplifiers has at lest one optical fiber (2), tranceivers, (S1. . . , SN) placed along the fiber and having in each case at least one travelling wave semiconductor optical amplifier (A1. . . , AN), which is located in series with the fiber and transmission means (L1, L2) for feeding into the fiber at least one continuous optical signal. Each amplifier is used alternately to modulate the continuous optical signal in order to transmit information, and to detect information modulations of the optical signal which carry information.

Optical communications system using travelling wave semiconductor

A wavelength multiplexing device comprising a switching matrix (18) of the N to 1 type, which has several successive stages (18a,18b) of controllable optical couplers (20) interconnected to form a tree structure and modulating means (24) connected to the output of the switching matrix (18). The device further has N sources (10,12,14,16) each emitting a continuous light beam having a particular wavelength to an input of the matrix, and a control circuit (22) connected to the couplers and controlling the latter so as to select P wavelengths from among the N available wavelengths. The device allows efficient transmission of data through an optical network.

Rapidly reconfigurable wavelength multiplexing device

Device able to continuously tune a coherent and rectilinearly polarized light source. It includes an electro-optical device (5) forming a spectral filter with an electrically modulable transfer function, this electro-optical device being provided so as to select a particular longitudinal mode from all the longitudinal modes able to oscillate inside the external cavity for which the source (1) is provided and which is ended by a reflecting device (3) towards the source of the light emitted by this source, and an electro-optical device (4) for varying the optical length of the cavity, this variation device being placed in the cavity and provided so as to continuously move the position of the selected longitudinal mode, each electro-optical device including a compact electro-optical crystal.
