A hologram recorder includes a signal beam irradiator to irradiate a signal beam, which is optically modulated in accordance with information to be recorded, to a recording medium at a predetermined incident angle. The hologram recorder also includes a recording prism provided with surfaces including an incident surface, a reflective surface and an emission surface for light so that a recording reference beam is guided to the recording medium by way of these surfaces. A hologram recorder (A) includes: a light source () for emitting a coherent beam; a spatial light modulator () provided with unit areas having a plurality of beam reflection elements () to reflect the beam from the light source () in a main direction as a signal beam or a cut-off direction; and a signal beam optical system () for directing the signal beam to the hologram recording medium (B). The recorder (A) further includes: a wavefront reshaper () for condensing the beams thinned out in the cut-off direction by the beam reflection element () of the modulator (), and reshaping the wavefront of the condensed beams; and a reference beam optical system () for directing the beam from the reshaper () to the recording medium (B) as a reference beam to be shone in an overlapping manner with the signal beam.

A hologram recorder applies a recording beam (S) and a reference beam (R) to the illumination site (p) of a hologram recording medium (B). The interference between the recording beam (S) and the reference beam (R) produces multiple hologram recording at the illumination site (p). The recorder includes a recording-purpose reference beam reflector () for reflecting the reference beam (R) to the illumination site (p), and a pivot mechanism for pivoting the reflector () about an axis (x) to vary the incident angle (&#x3b8;r) of the reflected reference beam (R) to the recording medium (B). The reflector () is disposed to cross a predetermined optical path. The axis (x) of the pivot mechanism is so arranged that the reflected reference beam (R) is directed to the illumination site (p) even when the incident angle (&#x3b8;r) of the beam (R) changes due to the pivoting of the reflector ().

Hologram recording apparatus and hologram recording/reproducing method

A hologram recorder (A) records holograms in a selected unit recording area (B) of a hologram recording medium (B) by interference between a recording beam (Lr) which is applied vertically to the unit recording area (B) and a reference beam (Lr) which is applied obliquely to the unit recording area (B). The hologram recorder (A) includes a reference beam oblique applier (A,B) for application of the reference beam (Lr) obliquely to the unit recording area (B) by reflection, and a reference beam swing mechanism () for supporting the reference beam oblique applier (A,B) and for swinging the reference beam oblique applier (A,B) about a predetermined rotation axis which is perpendicular to an entering direction of the recording beam (Lw) that makes an entry into the unit recording area.

A hologram recorder is provided, in which coherent light from a light source is split into a signal beam and a reference beam, and the signal beam is modulated by a spatial light modulator to be directed to a hologram recording medium, while the reference beam is directed to the hologram recording medium to overlap with the signal beam for recording a hologram on the hologram recording medium. The hologram recorder includes a beam phase modulator provided with a plurality of optical devices (') each configured to assume one of two modes such as ON mode and OFF mode, the ON mode for causing the reference beam to be passed or reflected in a predetermined direction toward the hologram recording medium, the OFF mode for causing the reference beam to be blocked or directed in another direction other than the predetermined direction. Each optical device (&#x2032;) provides a phase difference 0 or &#x3c0;. A phase modulation controller is also provided for individually controlling the optical devices (&#x2032;) to cause each of the optical devices to assume the ON mode or the OFF mode, thereby modulating the reference beam into a beam having a predetermined phase pattern.

A holographic recorder can vary the optical distance between an object lens and a relay lens near the object lens. This arrangement allows defocus-multiplexing utilizing state variations in the laser beam when the beam reaches a storage medium.

Holographic recording device

A hologram recorder records a hologram in a hologram recording medium by interference of a recording beam irradiated at a predetermined incident angle to the medium via a spatial light modulator incliningly in a predetermined direction with a reference beam irradiated incliningly in an opposite direction to the recording beam so that the beams crosses at a predetermined crossing angle. The recorder includes a beam modulator for converting a Gaussian-beam having a Gaussian-distribution of intensity into a parallel beam having an intensity distribution tending to be uniform and allowing the parallel beam to travel to the spatial modulator as the recording beam. The Gaussian-beam has a center axis decentered from an optical axis of the beam modulator in a decentering direction including a directional component of the predetermined direction in which the recording beam is inclined or an opposite directional component thereto.

A thermally assisted magnetic recording medium includes a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface. A recording layer is formed on the first surface of the substrate. A plurality of thermally conductive regions are provided at the first surface of the substrate to extend in parallel to each other and about the center of rotation of the recording medium. The thermally conductive regions have a higher thermal conductivity than the substrate, and are at least partially embedded in the substrate.

Thermally assisted magnetic recording medium

A recording and reproducing apparatus includes a light source to emit a laser beam, an information light beam irradiation unit to irradiate a medium with an information light beam, a reference light beam irradiation unit to irradiate the medium with a reference light beam so as to form a specific speckle pattern on the medium. The reference light beam irradiation unit comprises a diffusion board provided in the way of a light path through which the laser beam is passed and generating the reference light beam, a rotation controller to rotate the diffusion board, and an identification information detector to detect identification information previously formed on a surface of the diffusion board. The diffusion board comprises a plurality of encode storage regions in which different identification information is formed and a plurality of diffusion pattern generation regions specified by the identification information. A position of the diffusion board is controlled based on the detected identification information such that a desired diffusion pattern generation region comes to a position through which the laser beam is passed while the laser beam is outputted.

A recording and reproducing apparatus has a recording control section for multiplex-recording data in one of recording unit regions of a holographic recording medium; a reproducing control section for selectively reproducing the data multiplex-recorded in the recording unit region; a measuring section for causing specific data to be recorded in a recording unit region A to measure a maximum multiplex-recordable number N of the region A; a multiplicity setting section for setting (i) a multiplex-recording number M (M&#x3c;N) of data to be recorded in the region A and (ii) a multiplex-recording number (N&#x2212;M) of a buffer region of the region A, by using the maximum multiplex-recordable number N; and a storage section for storing the number N and the number M.
