A liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes: a active matrix substrate; a liquid crystal layer; and a counter substrate opposing the active matrix substrate with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween. A liquid crystal display device is formed by arranging a plurality of scanning lines 3.sub.1, 3.sub.2, . . . to which scanning signals are successively applied and a plurality of signal lines 4.sub.1, 4.sub.2, . . . to which data signals are successively applied to intersect at right angles. A dummy scanning line 3.sub.0 for forming a capacitance is arranged outside of the scanning line 3.sub.1 located at the outermost position on a scanning start side of scanning signal. In this structure, since an equal parasitic capacitance is generated in the pixels irrespectively of their positions, it is possible to eliminate defects, such as deterioration of display quality due to an appearance of a bright line in particular pixels.

A transmissive liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal layer interposed between a first substrate and a second substrate. The first substrate includes gate lines, source lines and switching devices provided in a vicinity of intersectional portions of the gate lines and the source lines. The switching devices include gate electrodes connected to the gate lines, source electrodes connected to the source lines and drain electrodes connected to pixel electrodes for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. An interlayer insulating film having high transparency is provided above the switching devices, the gate lines and the source lines. The interlayer insulating film has roughness on its surface. Transmissive liquid crystal display apparatus and method for producing

First and second gate insulating films, a semiconductor layer made of a-Si(i), and an etching stopper layer are formed to cover a gate electrode on a glass substrate. A drain electrode side contact layer and a source electrode side contact layer are made out of a-Si(n.sup.+) in such a manner to be cut off on the etching stopper layer. A disconnection preventing a-Si(n.sup.+) wire is formed below a source wire in its longitudinal direction, and atop of which a pixel electrode is formed. Since the disconnection preventing a-Si(n.sup.+) wire and source electrode side contact layer are spaced apart, static-induced characteristics deterioration of TFT and the point and line defects during the substrate fabrication sequence can be eliminated and the non-defective ratio of the display device can be improved drastically.

A liquid crystal display device incorporating an active matrix substrate having an inter-layer insulating film between a pixel electrode and gate and source signal lines. In this liquid crystal display device, the source signal line has a double-layer structure of an upper-layer line and a lower-layer line, but the upper-layer line is eliminated at the intersection of the gate signal line and the source signal line. This structure prevents a decrease in the thickness of the inter-layer insulating layer on the intersection of the gate signal line and the source signal line.

This invention provides an inspecting method, an inspecting apparatus, and a defect correcting method, for an active matrix substrate including: a gate bus line; a source bus line; a pixel electrode; a switching element for driving the pixel electrode; and a pair of electrodes constituting an auxiliary capacitance. The inspecting method includes: a step of disposing a counter substrate having a face on which a counter electrode is formed so that the face faces the active matrix substrate with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, and connecting signal supplying terminals to gate bus lines and source bus lines and the counter electrode; and a detection step of detecting a defect on the active matrix substrate by performing at least one of a first signal generating step, a second signal generating step, and a third signal generating step. The first, second, and third signal generating steps all include alternately applying an ON signal for turning on the switching element and an OFF signal for turning off the switching element to the gate bus line. The first signal generating step includes applying a first detecting signal having a voltage which changes before the ON signal is applied to the source bus line. The second signal generating step includes applying a second detecting signal having a voltage which changes before and after the ON signal is applied. The third signal generating step includes applying a third detecting signal having a voltage which changes after the ON signal is applied.

An active display device, comprising: a plurality of source buses and a plurality of gate buses; a plurality of pixel electrodes, said pixel electrodes each having associated therewith a switching element for delivering a drive signal to said pixel electrode from at least one of said source buses as a function of a signal provided by at least one of said gate buses; and means other than said switching elements for selectively electrically connecting at least one of said pixel electrodes to a corresponding one of said source buses in the event said at least one pixel electrode is considered to be defective.
