A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal cell, first and second phase plates and a first polarizing plate stacked, in this order, on the outer surface of a first transparent substrate, third and fourth phase plates and a second polarizing plate stacked, in this order, on the outer surface of a second transparent substrate. The optical characteristics of the liquid crystal cell, the first to fourth phase plates, and the first and second polarizing plates are set within a predetermined range.

Transflective liquid crystal display device having liquid crystal layer with much larger transmissive retardation than reflective retardation

The invention provides a light guide member and an illuminating device which are able to efficiently uniformly irradiate illumination light to only an area requiring illumination. Therefore, a reflection face is constructed by reflection stripes such as many grooves, etc. widened in a concentric circle shape. Light from a light source unit is widened toward this entire reflection face without irregularities by a diffusing portion such as a reflection prism, etc. Thus, only the range actually requiring the illumination can be illuminated without irregularities, and visibility of the illumination range using a front light is raised.

A method of making a color filter includes the steps of bringing a color film sheet provided with a heat-fusible color dye layer into close contact with a support, and heating the color film sheet to transfer the color dye layer onto the support. The color film sheet further includes a light-heat conversion layer and a base film deposited under the color dye layer, and a separating layer provided between the base film and the color dye layer. Alternatively, the color film sheet further includes a base film and a light-heat conversion layer deposited under the color dye layer, and a stress-relieving layer provided between the base film and the color dye layer.

Disclosed is a method for orienting and processing a liquid cristal display element by rubbing, comprising: forming an orienting film for covering a transparent electrode on a substrate, thereafter rotating on the substrate a roller having a rubbing material wound on the outer peripheral surface thereof with a number of fibers stood upright, and therby rubbing the orienting film with the fibers. The upright direction of the fibers with respect to the outer peripheral surface of the roller is inclined in the rotational direction of the roller.
