In an example, a wireless communication system and apparatuses thereof are described. In an example long-term evolution (LTE) network, a first base station hands over a connection to a second base station. The first base station may be a (femto) home eNodeB (HeNB) or (macro) eNodeB. The second base station may also be a HeNB or eNodeB connected to a different gateway. The first base station may send 'Handover Request' on an X2 connection, identifying the gateway that the second base station is connected to as the correct gateway. After sending a 'Handover Request Acknowledgement,' the second base station correctly establishes a tunnel to a connected gateway device.

In accordance with one example embodiment, there is provided a method that includes determining whether a received overload message includes a traffic load reduction indication element; determining a percentage of network elements to which to relay the received overload message if the received overload message includes the traffic load reduction indication element; and selecting ones of the network elements to which to send the received overload message based on the determined percentage. The method may further include modifying the received message to change a value of the traffic load reduction indication element; and sending the modified message to the selected ones of the network elements. In some embodiments, the received overload message includes a mobility management element ('MME') START message.

An example method is provided in one example embodiment and includes receiving, by a first Home eNodeB (HeNB), a first attach request from a user equipment (UE) for attaching a subscriber associated with the UE to a small cell network; determining whether the subscriber has transitioned into the small cell network from a macro cell network; exchanging, based on the determination, a first pair of messages between the first HeNB and the UE to determine an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) of the subscriber; and exchanging, based on the determination, one or more second pairs of messages between the first HeNB and the UE to advance a sequence number for Non-Access Stratum (NAS) messages for the UE to a value corresponding to a received sequence number for the first attach request from the UE.

System and method for identifying a subscriber in a network environment

The present invention identifies methods and procedures for correlating control plane and user plane data, consolidating and abstracting the learned and correlated data in a form convenient for minimizing and exporting to other network devices, such as those in the Core Network and the Access Network, or the origin server, CDN devices or client device. These correlation methods may use Control Plane information from a plurality of interfaces in the RAN, and User plane information from other interfaces in the RAN or CN. IF the device is deployed as an inline proxy, this information may be exported using in-band communication, such as HTTP extension headers in HTTP Request or Response packets, or another protocol header, such as the IP or GTP-U header field. Alternatively, this information can be exported out-of-band using a separate protocol between the RAN Transit Network Device (RTND) and the receiving device.
