An optical system and method are presented to produce a desired illuminating light pattern. The system comprises a light source system configured and operable to produce structured light in the form of a plurality of spatially separated light beams; and a beam shaping arrangement. The beam shaping arrangement is configured as a diffractive optical unit configured and operable to carry out at least one of the following: (i) combining an array of the spatially separated light beams into a single light beam thereby significantly increasing intensity of the illuminating light; (ii) affecting intensity profile of the light beam to provide the illuminating light of a substantially rectangular uniform intensity profile.

Optical system and method for use in projection systems

An image projecting device and method are presented. The device comprises a light source system, a spatial light modulator (SLM) unit, and an image projection optics accommodated at the output side of the SLM unit. The SLM unit may be reflective or transmissive. The SLM unit comprises an SLM pixel arrangement enclosed between two glass substrates. The pixel array arrangement is formed by a pixel array assembly and at least one microlens assembly. The microlens assembly includes at least one microlens array accommodated proximate of the pixel array assembly. The light source system may comprise n light sources and a light converting means in optical path of light generated by the n light sources, to thereby produce m light beams of different wavelength ranges, wherein m&#x3e;n. The light source system may comprise a multi-mode laser, thereby reducing a speckle effect in an integrated speckle pattern produced by the multiple modes, as compared to that of a single mode.

Image projecting device and method

An image projecting device is presented. The device comprises an SLM pixel arrangement; and two lens arrays. The lens arrays are respectively located at opposite surfaces of the SLM pixel arrangement and are integral with the SLM pixel arrangement, forming together with the SLM pixel arrangement a common SLM unit. Each lens in one array and a respective opposite lens in the other array are associated with a corresponding one of the pixels. Each of the lens arrays is implemented in a polymer spacer and is either spaced from the corresponding surface of the opposite surfaces of the pixel arrangement a distance substantially not exceeding 50 &#x3bc;m or is in physical contact with the respective surface. The device also comprises a light source system operable to produce an incident light beam of a predetermined cross section corresponding to the size of an active surface of the SLM pixel arrangement; and a magnification optics.
