Provided is a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine, which can adequately perform the control of a fuel injection amount even when an abnormality, a disconnection or the like of a fuel pressure sensor occurs and thereby accurate fuel pressure information is not able to be obtained. A fuel injection valve () is provided which is capable of directly injecting fuel into a cylinder. If a target fuel injection amount is smaller than a minimum fuel injection amount that is minimum and is capable of injecting during one opening and closing operation of the fuel injection valve (), the start timing of fuel injection is set within a period in which an exhaust valve is opened during an exhaust stroke.

A device for controlling an internal combustion engine which uses, as the fuel, a heavy fuel, a light fuel, an alcohol fuel and a mixture thereof, comprising a heavy fuel/light fuel ratio detectorcapable of detecting the ratio of the heavy fuel and the light fuel, and an air-fuel ratio detectorfor detecting the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas, wherein the amount of fuel injection is calculated based on the heavy fuel/light fuel ratio detector so that the air-fuel ratio becomes a target air-fuel ratio. The heavy fuel/light fuel ratio detector can be correctly diagnosed if it is in an abnormal condition even when an alcohol-mixed fuel is used.

A boost pressure control system for an engine, by which a boost pressure of the engine is controlled in accordance with a load of the engine. The system controls the boost pressure in two different control modes, i.e., an acceleration mode and a normal mode, and when a degree of acceleration required becomes larger than a predetermined value, the acceleration mode is selected in which the boost pressure is made higher than in the normal mode. To avoid a sudden drop of the boost pressure, the system maintains the acceleration mode even after the completion of the acceleration, until the engine load becomes low enough that the boost pressure drops to the level at which the switching to the normal mode does not cause a sudden pressure drop.

Boost pressure control system for a supercharged engine

A boost pressure control system for an engine, by which the degree of opening of the air bypass valve is adjusted and on/off of a mechanical supercharger operation is controlled to obtain an appropriate boost pressure. In the system, the degree of opening of the air bypass valve is adjusted in accordance with the load of the engine, based on different characteristics selected in accordance with whether the operation of the supercharger is started or stopped. If the engine is operated in a non-boost region, when the supercharger is operating the degree of opening of the air bypass valve is made larger to reduce the compression work of the supercharger, and when the operation of the supercharger is stopped, the degree of opening of the air bypass valve is made smaller to ensure that the air flow through the supercharger maintains the rotation of the rotors of the supercharger.

An exhaust by-pass system in an internal combustion engine provided with a turbocharger. The turbocharger is the so-called twin entry type having a pair of scroll passageways connected to two groups of cylinders of the engine, respectively. By-pass passageways are formed in a housing of the turbine of the turbocharger. The by-pass passageways are connected to scroll passageways, respectively at positions near their inlets. The by-pass passageways are opened or closed by a common by-pass control valve arranged in a tubular boss portion of the housing.

With this construction, it becomes possible for a driver to run his car in accordance with the indications of the shift operation on the indicator so as to enable the economical running of the car to be realized.
