A preparation control for suppressing fluctuation of an output torque of the engine at the time of executing switching operation from the whole cylinder operation to the partial cylinder operation is executed when having made a switching request from the whole cylinder operation to the partial cylinder operation. The target switching time executing the switching operation is calculated in accordance with the valve operation phase after the preparation time is completed. The cylinder deactivation mechanism is controlled such that the switching operation is executed at the target switching time. The target switching time is set in accordance with the valve operation phase at the timing in which the abnormal noises are not generated.

A cooling system for a vehicle, includes a first cooling circuit including a first coolant passage and a first pump. The first pump is provided in the first coolant passage to circulate coolant in the first cooling circuit so as to cool a first device to a first temperature. The second pump is provided in the second coolant passage to circulate coolant in the second cooling circuit so as to cool a second device to a second temperature. The pumping loss calculation device calculates a basic amount of a pumping loss torque based on intake and exhaust pressures, a pumping loss torque of the pumping loss torque of the engine, which varies with a change in the opening timing of the exhaust valve, as an exhaust gas sweep-out loss torque, based on the estimated in-cylinder gas amount and a detected exhaust phase, and the pumping loss torque based on the basic amount and the exhaust gas sweep-out loss torque.
