An apparatus is to assist an unskilled player in playing a musical instrument by detecting the quantity of the player's manipulation against the instrument, modifying the detected manipulation quantity with reference to a recommended manipulation to a degree according to a given assistance coefficient, and actuating the instrument with the modified manipulation quantity. For a brass instrument, the apparatus comprises an embouchure sensor and a breath pressure sensor to detect the embouchure and the breath pressure of the player as he/she plays the brass instrument. The detected embouchure and breath pressure are then modified with reference to a recommended embouchure and breath pressure weighted by a given assistance coefficient. The apparatus actuates the brass instrument based on the modified embouchure and breath pressure.

A music apparatus is communicable with a supervisory computer through a network for remotely training a user in matching with a skill level. In the music apparatus, an instrument is manually operable by the user for generating a performance. A monitor displays a lesson score in matching with the skill level so that the user is prompted to render the displayed lesson score by operating the instrument for generating a sample performance. A processor compares event data representative of the sample performance with note data representative of the lesson score to locally execute a quantitative evaluation of the sample performance. A transmitter transmits the event data representative of the sample performance to the supervisory computer through the network so that the supervisory computer can work to remotely provide a qualitative evaluation of the sample performance according to the event data to thereby arrange instruction data. The qualitative evaluation is different from the quantitative evaluation and is locally unavailable. A receiver receives the instruction data from the supervisory computer through the network to pass the instruction data to the processor. The processor operates based on either of the local quantitative evaluation and the remote qualitative evaluation represented by the received instruction data for modifying the lesson score effective to improve the skill level of the user.

A fully computerized musical performance teaching system comprises a computer apparatus having a keyboard and a display and is connectable to an electronic musical instrument. An application program provides the computer with various functions such as of judging student's skills, selecting music pieces for practice, training the student in performance and evaluating the student's progress through the teaching course. The judging function is to judge the student's performance skill from the student's responses to the subjects which the computer presents. The selecting function is to select a piece of music for practice according to the judgment results and the student's wishes and also to select a tutoring manner from among several prepared manners. The training function is to plan a practice schedule to meet the student's performance skill and wishes and to let the student practice with proper music pieces. The evaluation function is to evaluate and mark the student's performance, and reflect the evaluation results and marked points in the progressing rate and the presented subjects and also in adjusting the judgment results.

A pattern memory stores plural accompaniment patterns for each of plural accompaniment components, and each of the accompaniment components is composed of one or more musical instrument parts. An operator is provided for selecting a desired accompaniment pattern for each of the components, and the accompaniment patterns correspond, in accordance with a predetermined rule, to different possible manners in which the operator is actuated, so that a specific accompaniment pattern corresponding to a manner in which the operator is actually actuated. A new accompaniment pattern is registered into the pattern memory in accordance with the predetermined rule. Information indicative of the predetermined rule may be shown on a display. The pattern memory may store accompaniment patterns for each of plural different accompaniment styles, and specific accompaniment patterns may by shared between the accompaniment styles. There are proposed various variations to select a desired accompaniment pattern for each accompaniment component. Further, it is also possible to selectively read out a predetermined part of a specific accompaniment pattern and to set such a condition to prevent a specific accompaniment from being read out. Moreover, it is possible to read out a specific accompaniment pattern which satisfies a predetermined retrieval condition or which is close to a desired accompaniment pattern. It is also possible to read out plural accompaniment patterns in sequence for sequential reproductive performance.
