A methacrylic resin having a cyclic structure in a main chain thereof, a shaped article, and an optical component or automotive part, in which the glass transition temperature is higher than 120&#xb0; C. and 160&#xb0; C. or lower, and the sign of the orientational birefringence when being oriented so as to have a degree of orientation of 0.03 is different from the sign of the orientational birefringence when being oriented so as to have a degree of orientation of 0.08.

Provided are a methacrylic resin having high heat resistance, highly controlled birefringence, and excellent color tone and transparency, and a production method, a molded article, and an optical or automotive component of the methacrylic resin. The methacrylic resin includes N-substituted maleimide monomer-derived structural units (B) in a main chain thereof in a proportion of 5 mass % to 40 mass %. The N-substituted maleimide monomer-derived structural units (B) include a structural unit represented by formula (1). The methacrylic resin has a glass transition temperature of higher than 120&#xb0; C. and not higher than 160&#xb0; C. The content of components that exhibit light absorption at a wavelength of 400 nm in methanol-soluble content of the methacrylic resin is more than 0 mass % and not more than 2 mass % as calculated in terms of N-phenylmaleimide.

Methacrylic resin and production method, molded article, and optical or automotive component of same

Provided are a methacrylic resin composition and a film containing a methacrylic resin that includes: 50 mass % to 97 mass % of a methacrylic acid ester monomer unit (A); 3 mass % to 30 mass % of a structural unit (B) having a cyclic structure-containing main chain; and 0 mass % to 20 mass % of another vinyl monomer unit (C) that is copolymerizable with a methacrylic acid ester monomer. The methacrylic resin satisfies the following conditions (1) and (2): (1) the methacrylic resin has a weight average molecular weight of 65,000 to 300,000 as measured by GPC; and (2) the total content of specific components is 0.01 mass % to 0.40 mass % as determined by GC/MS.
