A shift lever device has resin pieces, and a resin outer tube which is formed at an outer side of a shift lever main body. The resin pieces and the resin outer tube can be molded separately. Therefore, the resin pieces independently can be molded with high precision. Even in a structure in which interposed portions of the resin pieces are interposed between a detent pin and inner walls of long holes of the shift lever main body, the interposed portions do not project-out unnecessarily at an inner side of the shift lever main body. Resin can be interposed between the detent pin and the long holes of the shift lever main body, without carrying out precise inspection or repair work.

Shift lever device

A gate-type shift lever device in which a pin is formed at a mounting piece formed at a back wall portion of a base, which pin axially supports a plate switch. Two levers are formed at the plate switch. A shift lever abuts and presses one of the levers during a shift operation from a &ldquo;D&rdquo; position to a &ldquo;4&rdquo; position. The shift lever abuts and presses another of the levers, during a shift operation from a &ldquo;2&rdquo; position to an &ldquo;L&rdquo; position. In accordance with rotation of the plate switch due to the pressing forces received by the levers, a holder contact moves transversely. Thus, the shift operations from the &ldquo;D&rdquo; position to the &ldquo;4&rdquo; position and from the &ldquo;2&rdquo; position to the &ldquo;L&rdquo; position can be detected.

When a key is rotated, it is moved in order of an ON position, an R position, an N position and a D position so that the range of an automatic transmission is switched. Moreover, when the key is pressed in the ON position and the N position, it is moved to a START position so that power is applied to a starter. In this case, it is possible to carry out an operation for starting an engine and an operation for switching the range of the automatic transmission by manipulating the same key in a different direction. Therefore, the operation for starting an engine and the operation for switching the range of the automatic transmission can be carried out easily.

The lever body includes a recess (receiver) defined by an upper plate and the projections as shown in FIG. A notch is formed in the upper plate (see FIG. ). The notch permits the first locking piece to move from its retreating position to the operating position in the recess The dimension of the notch in the Y direction (the width of the notch ) and the dimension of the notch in the notch X direction (the depth of the notch ) are both shorter than the corresponding dimensions of the recess The upper plate functions as a prohibiting member.

A shift device including a key cylinder and a shift lever is disclosed. The key cylinder is located adjacent to the shift lever. The key cylinder receives a key corresponding to the key cylinder. When the key is located at the ON position, the key cylinder generates an engine driving signal to an engine ECU. A stopping mechanism is located between the key cylinder and the shift lever for selectively stopping the movement of the shift lever depending on the selected key position.
