An upper case () is connected to a lower case () in a hinge portion () so as to freely rotate. A plate shaped conductor () and a plate shaped conductor () are disposed along the surface of the case in the upper case (). A ground plate () is formed in a ground pattern of a circuit board disposed in the lower case (). The plate shaped conductor () and the plate shaped conductor () are selected by a high frequency switch () and connected to one end of a feeding portion (). The other end of the feeding portion () is connected to the ground plate () to form a dipole antenna.

Portable wireless machine

It is an object of the invention to provide a portable wireless apparatus capable of maintaining high quality of a communication in various using configurations obtained by a two-axis hinge mechanism. A portable wireless apparatus () having a two-axis hinge portion includes a first antenna () which is suitable for a talking state and a second antenna () which is suitable for a waiting state. The first antenna () or the second antenna () is selected based on a result of opening/closing detection decided from an angle &#x3b1; of a first axis () and the result of opening/closing detection decided from an angle &#x3b2; of a second axis (). Consequently, it is possible to select either of the antennas which is not influenced by hands or fingers of a user.

Portable wireless apparatus

An antenna apparatus for use in a wristwatch radio communication device equipped with, for example, a PHS is provided. The antenna apparatus includes a loop conductor and a feed. The loop conductor has a given length and connects electrically at one end to a ground plate installed in the wristwatch radio communication device. The feed is disposed between the other end of the loop conductor and the ground plate. This provides a higher horizontal pattern average gain both during conversation and waiting times of radio communication.

A microstrip antenna (MSA) above a ground plane, having a size corresponding to an operation frequency, at a junction point thereof, electrically connected to one end of a monopole antenna having a size corresponding to the operation frequency to operate as a complex antenna. A distance between the feed point of MSA and the junction point determines the input impedance for matching. A microstrip line or an (planer) inverted-F antenna may provide the MSA. The monopole element may be a monopole antenna or helical antenna. A portable wireless communication apparatus includes the antenna apparatus having a housing. The monopole antenna is connected to the MSA when the monopole antenna is extended from the housing. A switch may be provided between the monopole antenna and the MSA for diversity operation. The antenna apparatus may be formed on a Printed circuit board and folded.
