Provided is a graphite-based negative electrode active material that can impart both high output characteristics and high cycle characteristics to a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. The graphite-based negative electrode active material disclosed herein is made up of particles having, in a cross-sectional view, a flat central portion made up of graphite, and a porous accumulation portion made up of accumulated graphite, on both sides of the flat central portion. The graphite that makes up the flat central portion is present more densely than the graphite that makes up the porous accumulation portion.

The greater of the two peel strengths is at least 1.5 times greater than the smaller of the two.

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided that has both good safety and durability characteristics while at the same time has high charge/discharge capacity. The cathode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention is a lithium nickel composite oxide to which at least two or more kinds of metal elements including aluminum are added, and comprises secondary particles that are composed of fine secondary particles having an average particle size of 2 &#x3bc;m to 4 &#x3bc;m, and rough secondary particles having an average particle size of 6 &#x3bc;m to 15 &#x3bc;m, with an overall average particle size of 5 &#x3bc;m to 15 &#x3bc;m; where the aluminum content of fine secondary particles (metal mole ratio: SA) is greater than the aluminum content of rough secondary particles (metal mole ratio: LA), and preferably the aluminum concentration ratio (SA/LA) is within the range 1.2 to 2.6.

In the heat resistance layer at the end portion, the amount of the binder contained per unit volume in a substrate layer side region is higher than the amount of the binder contained per unit volume in a surface region which includes a surface of the heat resistance layer.

A production method for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries includes a conditioning process in which an electrode group having a positive electrode and a negative electrode wound by interposing a separator therebetween is inserted inside a case a non-aqueous electrolyte including an overcharge additive is injected and the case is sealed, after which a restraining pressure is applied to the case, and charge/discharge is performed at least once. After initial charging in the conditioning process, a fracture portion is formed in secondary particles of a positive electrode active material, and then a conductive coating is formed on the fracture portion.
