A manufacturing method of a honeycomb structure that can improve a manufacturing efficiency and a raw material yield is provided. There is provided a manufacturing method of a honeycomb structure comprising: subjecting a raw material to extrusion forming to form a honeycomb formed bodyhaving a partition wall that partitions a plurality of cells that serve as flow paths for a fluid and are extended from one end surface to the other end surface; forming a plurality of notches extended in a direction along which the cells are extended in the honeycomb formed bodyto form a partial segment aggregatein such a manner that a plurality of partial segmentsare partitioned; and forming a buffer portionbetween respective partial segmentsadjacent to each other in the partial segment aggregateto fill an entire space between the respective partial segments adjacent to each other, thereby obtaining a honeycomb structure

Honeycomb structure

A honeycomb structure has a plurality of honeycomb segments each including porous partition walls that define a plurality of cells communicating with two end surfaces and an outer wall that surrounds the partition walls. The honeycomb segments are combined in a direction perpendicular to the axial directions of the honeycomb segments, and the outer walls of the honeycomb segments are integrally joined by a joint material. The outer wall of each honeycomb segment has corners. A cell in contact with the inner surface of a portion of the outer wall having one of the corners is defined by a plurality of sides including two sides formed by the inner surface and two sides each having one end in contact with the inner surface. An angle &#x3b8;a of the corner formed by the two sides each having the one end in contact with the inner surface is 100 to 150&#xb0;.

A honeycomb structure includes a honeycomb segment joined body comprising a plurality of honeycomb segments unitarily joined at joint faces thereof by means of a bonding material layer, and an outer peripheral coat layer, the honeycomb structure having a plurality of cells functioning as fluid passages disposed in parallel with one another in a central axis direction. A thickness of the outer peripheral coat layer at least at one portion of the portions (portions on end faces) located on end faces in longitudinal direction of the bonding material layer in a cross-section in a direction perpendicular to the central axis direction is larger than an average thickness of the portions other than the portions on end faces.

A method for regenerating an extrusion die for ceramic honeycomb structural bodies. The extrusion die includes a base metal and a titanium-based hard coating of an abrasion-resistant material which is formed on a surface of the base metal. The extrusion die is immersed in a solution of nitric acid when it has worn, so as to remove a residue of the hard coating from the surface of the base metal. Subsequently, a titanium-based fresh hard coating is formed on the surface of the base metal, and a pattern adjustment of the die is then performed wherein the surface of the fresh hard coating is locally ground so that the sliding resistance of the raw ceramic material becomes substantially uniform over the entire region of the die.
