The present invention relates to materials used for aligning liquid crystals of liquid crystal display elements and to a polymer for use in liquid crystal vertical alignment layer used in producing a liquid crystal vertical alignment layer. The polymer for use in a liquid crystal vertical alignment layer includes (a) a moiety that is photochemically isomerizable but not photochemically crosslinked, (b) a moiety that is photochemically crosslinkable, and (c) a moiety that stabilizes a vertical alignment. The polymer can be used to produce a vertical alignment layer that has a liquid crystal alignment property enabling control of alignment at a low UV dose and that offers a large pretilt angle and superior optical stability.

Since a 1-(trifluoromethyl)naphthalene derivative of the present invention has negative dielectric anisotropy, has a very large absolute value, is chemically stable with heat, light, water, and the like, moreover, it excels in compatibility with a liquid crystal compound or a liquid crystal composition used widely nowadays, it is suitable as an element of a practical liquid crystal composition capable of low voltage drive. In addition, the liquid crystal composition using the compound of the present invention has low drive voltage, is useful as a constituent material of the liquid crystal display device of low consumption of electrical power, and can be used suitably for liquid crystal display devices such as a VA type and an IPS type, and the like.

1-(trifluoromethyl)naphthalene derivative

The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric anisotropy whose absolute value is large, and a low viscosity, and also provides a VA type liquid crystal element using the same. Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition containing a compound represented by the general formula (I) and an alkenyl compound represented by the general formula (II): By combining the liquid compounds according to the present invention, a liquid crystal composition having a low viscosity and a negative dielectric anisotropy could be obtained while nearly maintaining physical properties such as refractive anisotropy. By using the composition, a liquid crystal element having excellent reliability, capable of maintaining a high voltage retention until a high temperature region, is provided, and the display is very applicable as a VA type, ECB type, or IPS type liquid crystal display, and is particularly effective for speeding up response without thinning cell gaps.

Nematic liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

The present invention was realized in order to provide a liquid crystal composition which is negative in dielectric constant anisotropy and having a large absolute value and a display element, and also to provide a compound which is negative in dielectric constant anisotropy and having a large absolute value. The present invention was realized in order to provide a trifluoronaphthalene derivative expressed by the general formula (I) a liquid crystal composition containing the above compound and a display element in which the liquid crystal composition is used. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention has features in which the dielectric constant anisotropy is great in absolute value, and a liquid crystal display element in which the liquid crystal composition is used as a constituting member is useful as a liquid crystal display element based on vertical alignment mode, IPS or others.

Trifluoronaphthalene derivative and liquid crystal composition containing the same

A nematic liquid crystal composition of the present invention includes 10 to 80% by mass of either one or at least two compounds represented by general formula (I) as a first component; and 20 to 70% by mass of either one or at least two compounds represented by general formula (II) as a second component, wherein a dielectric constant anisotropy is negative. The use of this nematic liquid crystal composition can provide a highly reliable liquid crystal display element capable of maintaining a high voltage-holding ratio even in a high temperature region, and achieving quick responsiveness without reducing the cell gap.

The present invention discloses a decahydronaphthalene derivative represented by general formula (I):a liquid crystal composition in which it is contained, and a liquid crystal device in which it is used. The novel decahydronaphthalene derivative of the present invention can be produced industrially extremely easily as shown in the examples, and by adding a small amount to a base liquid crystal, it is possible to have effects that expand the nematic phase temperature range, thereby improving its various characteristics as a nematic liquid crystal. Moreover, the novel decahydronaphthalene derivative of the present invention also has superior co-solubility with base liquid crystals generally used at present. Thus, it is suitable for various types of liquid crystal devices requiring a wide operating temperature range, and is extremely useful as a liquid crystal material.
