A method for encoding and decoding digital moving picture signals which can decode subframes appropriately in relation to time if a part of a bit stream is missing or an error occurs in the bit stream, and can suppress degradation of a reproduced picture if decoding of a subframe including a picture in motion in relation to time becomes unfeasible. In the method for encoding and decoding digital moving picture signals of this invention, information for one frame is encoded correspondingly to a spatial hierarchy of a frame, subframes and blocks. A subframe time position number and a subframe space number are attached to an identifier of each of the subframe, thereby resuming appropriate decoding of the subframes immediately after a trouble if an error occurs. The subframe identifiers are placed at a certain interval in the bit stream so as to give a smaller size to a subframe including a block which is in motion and difficult to be encoded, thereby suppressing degradation of a reproduced picture if decoding of the subframe becomes unfeasible.

Method for encoding and decoding moving picture signals

A decoding method and coding method of moving image signal, and a decoding apparatus and coding apparatus using the same, provides for coding or decoding at least two or more motion vectors, relating to the present processing pixel block, compensating the motion of the coded frame corresponding to each motion vector, generating two or more predicted images relating to the present processing image block, and selecting the predicted image for use in reconstruction of the present processing pixel block depending on presence or absence of decoding error contained in these two or more predicted images. Accordingly, if a decoding error occurs due to bit error in the bit stream, propagation of picture quality deterioration in time can be suppressed, so that excellent decoding of digital moving image signal is realized.

Decoding and coding method of moving image signal, and decoding and coding apparatus of moving image signal using the same

A vertical region designation circuitoutputs a vertical region designation signal to a vertical driveron the basis of vertical display position information, a vertical synchronization signal and a horizontal synchronization signal. Important quantized coefficients having absolute values which are higher than a threshold value are extracted from each of quantized coefficient streams into which a digital image signal is transformed, and an important quantized coefficient stream composed of the important quantized coefficients and zero-valued quantized coefficients is produced on condition that the number of important quantized coefficients and zero-valued quantized coefficients is equal to that of quantized coefficients in each quantized coefficient stream and positions of the important quantized coefficients in the important quantized coefficient stream are the same as those in a corresponding quantized coefficient stream. Also, a lesser-important quantized coefficient stream is produced by subtracting the important quantized coefficient stream from the corresponding quantized coefficient stream. Stronger error correction codes are added to each important quantized coefficient stream and are transmitted to a decoding apparatus, and less-strong error correction codes are added to each lesser-important quantized coefficient stream and are transmitted to the decoding apparatus. Therefore, an image having a superior quality can be reproduced with a high code efficiency.

Encoding apparatus for hierarchically encoding image signal and decoding

An input picture signal is divided into blocks. The blocks are grouped into groups each having a plurality of blocks. The input picture signal is encoded into a second picture signal block by block. The second picture signal uses a variable length code. An error correction signal is added to the second picture signal for each of the groups. A signal of a start address and a signal of a location address are added to the second picture signal for each of the groups. The start address represents a position of a bit within each of the groups. The location address representing a spatial position of a block within each of the groups.

Moving-picture signal encoding and related decoding

A digital video signal decoding apparatus has a memory for storing motion vectors which have been decoded by a decoder, and a motion vector calculating circuit for calculating a presumed motion vector from the motion vectors stored in the memory, whereby, even if part of a bit stream has been lost and each of pixel blocks which have been lost accordingly cannot be decoded, each of the lost pixel blocks is filled in by a corresponding pixel block in a preceeding frame which has been motion-compensated through a motion compensation circuit by using the presumed motion vector, thereby preventing degradation of the picture quality at that pixel block portion.

Digital video signal decoding apparatus and presumed motion vector

A moving-image signal encoding apparatus is provided in which information to be lost is suppressed to a minimum extent when a cell is lost in a transmission line. A cell assembler divides a bitstream into cells of bits and adds to the cells positional information of encoded words having particular meaning within the cell. When the cells are lost in the transmission line, a decoding is allowed from the encoded words having particular meaning which appears at a first bit of bitstream succeeding to the lost cells.
