A sewing machine includes a plurality of bobbins, thread guiding device, thread selecting device, a needle having an eye, a thread take-up lever having a thread receiving hole, thread taking-out device, movable thread hooking device, and thread letting-through device. The thread guiding device delivers a plurality of threads from the bobbins. The thread selecting device selects one of the threads. The thread taking-out device brings the selected thread adjacent to the eye of the thread. Simultaneously with the thread taking-out action of the thread taking-out device, the movable thread hooking device and the thread letting-through device co-operatively let the selected thread, being disposed between the thread take-up lever and the needle, pass through the thread receiving hole of the thread take-up lever via an opening of the thread receiving hole, and let the leading end of the selected thread pass through the eye of the needle.

A presser bar 11 is provided at its lower end with a fabric presser foot 13 and a nut 16. The fabric presser foot 13 is individually moved on the presser bar 11 independent of a reciprocating motion of the presser bar 11. Due to an action of a spring 14 the presser foot 13 is resiliently pressed against a fabric 40 to be sewn to reduce a noise while a needle is associated with a hook or shuttle 26.

The invention is directed to a driving apparatus for a sewing machine which has a table, an upper rotary shaft provided horizontally above the table for driving a needle, a lower rotary shaft provided horizontally below the table for driving a shuttle, a transmission mechanism for transmitting a rotational force to rotate the upper rotary shaft and the lower rotary shaft in synchronous relationship with each other, and a driving device for rotating the upper rotary shaft and the lower rotary shaft. The transmission mechanism includes a first toothed pulley which is mounted on the upper rotary shaft and rotated together therewith, a second toothed pulley which is mounted on the lower rotary shaft and rotated together therewith, and a double toothed belt on both sides of which is provided with teeth for meshing with the first toothed pulley and the second toothed pulley, respectively. The belt is held to be meshed with the first toothed pulley at one side of the belt, and held to be meshed with the second toothed pulley at the other side of the belt.

The invention is directed to a sewing head driving apparatus for a sewing machine which has a table, a lower rotary shaft provided horizontally below a table, a sewing head provided above the table in spaced relationship therewith, an upper rotary shaft provided horizontally in the sewing head, a transmission mechanism for transmitting a rotational force to rotate the upper rotary shaft and the lower rotary shaft in synchronous relationship with each other, and a needle driving device for reciprocating a needle vertically in accordance with rotation of the upper rotary shaft. In the sewing head driving apparatus, a parallel motion device is provided to support the sewing head movably on a horizontal plane above the table, and move the sewing head between an initial position and a position horizontally apart from the initial position to provide an open area above the table at the initial position, and a synchronous relationship maintaining mechanism is provided to maintain the synchronous relationship between the upper rotary shaft and the lower rotary shaft, independent from the motion of the sewing head by the parallel motion device.

An embroidering-frame driving device for a sewing machine comprises: an embroidering frame for holding cloth stretched tight; an embroidering-frame holder; a driving motor for driving the embroidering-frame holder in one direction with respect to the sewing needle; and a rotating motor for rotating the embroidering frame with respect to the embroidering-frame holder. In the device, for each of the sewing points forming an embroidery pattern, the rotating motor is turned until the sewing point comes to a straight line which is extended in the one direction passing through the sewing needle, and the driving motor is driven until the sewing point is moved from the straight line to come under the sewing needle.

A main body (an arm assembly and a bed assembly) of a sewing machine is made movable in both fore-and-aft direction and in a lateral direction over an extended area as compared with the size of an overall sewing machine to extend an area over which a sewing operation is enabled while simultaneously increasing the sewing rate. An arm assembly 5 and a bed assembly 2 are completely separate from each other mechanically, and are each supported by an independent shifting mechanism 10, 20 for movement through a same travel in directions of X- and Y-axes to shift a sewing position.

A sewing machine is disclosed in which an expenditure of lower thread is calculated from an expenditure of an upper thread. The expenditure of the upper thread is determined from the amount of rotation of a rotary tension disc. A pair of Hall elements deliver two phase signals, a phase difference therebetween is utilized to determine the direction of rotation, thus removing the likelihood of an error being caused by a rotation in the reverse direction. When the amount of leftover lower thread reduces below a given value, an alarm is issued. A sewing machine of a small size is enabled to deal with a fabric of an increased size to be sewn. A vertical spacing between an upper shaft mechanism and a lower shaft mechanism is adjustable. A need for a special control circuit which is designed for matching rotational positions of an upper and a lower shaft is dispensed with. At this end, a flexible wire 30 is used to connect an upper shaft unit 1 and a lower shaft unit 2 together. A single electric motor 10 is disposed within one of the upper and the lower shaft unit while a speed increasing mechanism 20 (or a speed reducing mechanism) is disposed in the other. An air cylinder 40 enables the vertical position of the upper shaft unit 1 to be adjustable.
