Disclosed is a two-dimensional code having improved design characteristics, for which any image can be added. The disclosed two-dimensional code divides data displayed in binary code into cells, arranges same as a pattern in a two-dimensional matrix, and has a position detection pattern. The two-dimensional code has embedded design information that indicates the existence of design areas wherein any design can be arranged and, if a design area exists, the position of the design area.

In this rectangular two-dimensional code, data expressed in binary code is divided into cells, and arranged as a two-dimensional matrix-like pattern. The two-dimensional code is characterized by being provided with a rectangular basic pattern section. The two-dimensional code is further characterized in that: the basic pattern section includes a plurality of position detection patterns for specifying cell positions, and version information indicating the size of the two-dimensional code; and the version information is used to enable the size of the two-dimensional code to be variably designed while the distances between the plurality of position detection patterns are in a fixed state.

Disclosed is a two-dimensional code which is not likely to be affected by contamination or out-of-focus photographing thereof and can thus be accurately recognized even when it is photographed under various photographing conditions. The disclosed two-dimensional code comprises: cells representing binary-coded data that are arranged as a pattern in the form of a two-dimensional matrix, the two-dimensional code comprising: a position detection pattern; plural data blocks created by dividing a region of the two-dimensional matrix that excludes the part of the position detection pattern; and a separation space arranged between the plural data blocks that are adjacent.
