A self-luminous display device includes emission pixels which are formed by sandwiching, through insulator layers, an emission layer between first and second electrodes. Holes are opened and arranged regularly in at least one of the first and second electrodes. The open sizes of the holes may be equal to or smaller than 50 &#x3bc;m, and may be smaller than 20 &#x3bc;m. Therefore, the self-luminous display device can be operated with a low power consumption.

Self-luminous display device having an inorganic EL element light emission unit between electrodes

An EL device includes a control unit that controls a driving circuit so that a plurality of EL elements emits light several times per driving cycle. Specifically, when a driving voltage is applied to the plurality of EL elements, the plurality of EL elements emits several times per driving cycle. As a result, since the amount of light integrated per time increases, the plurality of EL elements obtains high luminous power even if a plurality of El elements having a very short emission decay time is used.

Electroluminescent device with sufficient luminous power and driving method thereof

A thin-film EL display panel which has excellent packageability, high reliability and stable performance characteristics, and which can prevent nonuniformity of brightness and color from occurring and a fabrication method thereof are provided. In the above thin-film EL display panel, two thin-film EL elements,and,formed by sequentially laminating first electrodes,and,, first insulating layers, luminescent layers, second insulating layers and second electrodes,and,respectively on glass substrates,and,are laminated into position and connecting terminal portions,and,for connecting the first electrodes,and,and second electrodes,and,are formed on the edge portions of the substrates,and,of the thin-film EL elements,and,. connecting pad portions,and,which correspond respectively to the connecting terminal portions,and,of the thin-film EL element,are provided on the edge portions on the substrate of the thin-film EL element,, the connecting pad portions are connected to the connecting terminal portions of the other thin-film EL element via conductive coupling sections,and the connecting pad portions and the connecting terminal portions to which lead wires are connected are provided on the edge portion of one substrate at a position where both substrates will not be laminated.

Thin-film El display panel having uniform display characteristics

An electroluminescent display panel which is able to selectively display different colors by changing a voltage level imposed thereon is made in a simple structure. A first luminescent layer (4) emitting green light, for example, and a second luminescent layer (5) emitting orange light, for example, are directly laminated on each other without interposing an intermediate electrode therebetween. The second luminescent layer covers only a part of the first luminescent layer to form a single layer portion and a double layer portion. The single layer portion emits green light at a low voltage level, while the double layer portion emits lemon light having a higher luminance at a high voltage level. The display may be made in a form of a matrix or a certain pattern. The display panel may be used as an instrument panel for an automobile. The green light display is used at night time, while the lemon light display with a high luminance is used at day time to cope with sun light.

Multi-color electroluminescent display panel

In an electroluminescent element in which a first electrode, a first insulating layer, a luminescent layer, a second insulating layer and a second electrode are sequentially laminated on a substrate, the luminescent layer has a first and second luminescent portions which are located apart from each other. A color filter is provided above one of the first and second luminescent portions. The second electrode includes a first part electrode for activating the first luminescent portion and a second part electrode for activating the second luminescent portion. The color filter is formed so that a portion extending from a bottom face of the color filter is inserted into a gap between the first and second luminescent portions to surround an upper face and side faces of the one of the first and second luminescent portions.

Electroluminescent display element and manufacturing method for

An electroluminescent matrix display device which displays images with uniform brightness on its panel having connecting terminals for both scanning and data electrodes formed on one side of the panel is disclosed. Scanning electrodes requiring larger current than data electrodes are formed vertically on the panel so that they can be connected directly to the terminals formed on the bottom side of the panel, and data electrodes are formed horizontally to be connected to the terminals at the bottom side through wiring leads. Since the wiring leads have different lengths and resistances from one another, the resistances are compensated or adjusted by changing widths of the wiring leads or adding compensating resistors thereto so that the wiring resistances become uniform or differences thereof are reduced. Running directions of the scanning and data electrodes may be exchanged. In this case, wiring resistance differences for the scanning electrodes are eliminated or reduced in a similar manner as done for the data electrodes. In both cases, uniformity of image brightness is much improved.

Electroluminescent matrix display device

A thin-film electroluminescent device includes dielectric layers having improved dielectric characteristics. The device is fabricated by forming a first transparent electrode layer of ITO, a first dielectric layer, a luminescent layer, a second dielectric layer, and a second transparent electrode layer of ITO in this order on an insulating substrate. Each of the two dielectric layers is a film constituted by TaSnON. That is, the film includes tantalum, tin, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Dielectric thin film and thin-film EL device using same

A matrix-addressed electroluminescent display panel has lower electrodes and back electrodes orthogonally provided with each other through a luminescent layer and the like. A passivation layer is formed on the back electrodes on an opposite side of the lower electrodes with respect to the back electrodes, and back electrode leading members are formed on the passivation layer on an opposite side of the back electrodes with respect to the passivation layer to be electrically connected to the back electrodes. The lower electrodes have ends arranged on one side of a substrate, and the back electrode leading members are formed to have ends arranged on the same side of the substrate as the ends of the lower electrodes. Accordingly, terminals of the lower and back electrodes can be arranged on one side of the substrate, thereby preventing increase of the size of the display panel.

Matrix-addressed electroluminescent display device panel with

An EL element having a color filter formed on an upper electrode thereof enables a decrease in the pixel loss or line defects. In the EL element, a lower transparent electrode, first insulating layer, luminescent layer and upper transparent electrode are laminated on a glass substrate. Further, a color filter is formed on the upper transparent electrode. As the color filter there is used a posi-resist having an average molecular weight in a range of from 100 to 50000 or a nega-resist having a polymerization reaction percentage in a range of from 5% to 70%.

An electroluminescence element provided with a luminescent layer sandwiched between two electrodes on an insulating substrate. The luminescent layer is composed of zinc sulfide with a fluoride or a luminescent center element added, wherein the X-ray diffraction spectrum thereof has only a single peak at an X-ray diffraction angle from the luminescent layer, ranging from 25.degree. to 30.degree. according to a thin film X-ray diffraction measurement method using Cu-Kd radiation, and no other peaks of the X-ray diffraction spectrum exist at an X-ray diffraction angle of 27.degree..

Process for the production of electroluminescence element,

An electro-luminescent display apparatus which is capable of displaying two kinds of images is disclosed. The apparatus has a front and a rear electro-luminescent unit therein, and the green light emitted from the front unit directly displays the real image which looks close to a viewer while the orange light emitted from the rear unit is reflected by a reflector disposed at the back of the apparatus and displays a virtual image which looks far from the viewer. In order to reflect the light emitted backward from the front unit and the light emitted forward from the rear unit, reflecting electrodes are provided on the rear surface of the front unit or a reflecting film is disposed in the space between the front and the rear units.

Electro-luminescent display apparatus

A dry etching method performing dry etching of a material containing zinc forms and patterns a resist on the material to be etched, and etches the material using an etching gas which is a mixed gas of methane gas and an inert gas. A dry etching method that dry etches a material containing zinc etches the material using an etching gas that consists only of methane gas, an inert gas, and hydrogen gas alone. Another dry etching method that dry etches a material containing zinc introduces an etching gas that contains methane gas, an inert gas, and hydrogen gas into a dry etching device, in which the flow rate of the hydrogen gas is set such that it is equal to or greater than the value at which the amount of dissociated hydrogen becomes saturated, and etches the material using the etching gas. An EL element manufacturing method forms a first luminescent material containing zinc in its composition on a first insulated layer, forms a first resist that has a first pattern on the first luminescent material, dry etches the first luminescent material through the first resist, thereby forming the first luminescent layer; forms a second luminescent material having zinc in its composition on the first luminescent layer, forms a second resist on the second luminescent material, and dry etches the second luminescent material through the second resist.

Dry etching method and manufacturing method of manufacturing EL element

A thin-film EL display panel which has excellent packageability, high reliability and stable performance characteristics, and which can prevent nonuniformity of brightness and color from occurring and a fabrication method thereof are provided. In the above thin-film EL display panel, two thin-film EL elements 1 and 2 formed by sequentially laminating first electrodes 12 and 22, first insulating layers, luminescent layers, second insulating layers and second electrodes 16 and 26 respectively on glass substrates 11 and 21 are laminated into position and connecting terminal portions 12a, 22a, 16a and 26a for connecting the first electrodes 12 and 22 and second electrodes 16 and 26 are formed on the edge portions of the substrates 11 and 21 of the thin-film EL elements 1 and 2. Connecting pad portions 17 and 18 which correspond respectively to the connecting terminal portions 22a and 26a of the thin-film EL element 2 are provided on the edge portions on the substrate of the thin-film EL element 1, the connecting pad portions are connected to the connecting terminal portions of the other thin-film EL element via conductive coupling sections 19 and the connecting pad portions and the connecting terminal portions to which lead wires are connected are provided on the edge portion of one substrate at a position where both substrates will not be laminated.

Thin-film EL display panel having uniform display characteristics

A process for producing an electroluminescence element provided with a luminescent layer sandwiched between two electrodes on an insulating substrate, the luminescent layer being composed of a host material with a luminescent center element added. The process comprises a step of forming the aforesaid luminescent layer as a film onto the insulating substrate by either sputtering or evaporation, by use of a source material composed of a compound of an element of Group II and an element of Group VI, to which a halide of a rare earth element is added as the luminescent center element. The atmosphere at the time of the film formation contains either a halogen gas or halide gas. The aforesaid luminescent layer is formed as a film onto the insulating substrate by either sputtering or evaporation, by use of a source material composed of the aforesaid compound of an element of Group II and an element of Group VI, to which a fluoride or fluorine compound of the luminescent center element and a halide other than fluoride of the element of Group II are added. The film formation atmosphere may be pretreated with a chlorine-containing gas prior to a film formation step of forming the luminescent layer as a film onto the insulating substrate by a sputtering method by use of a source material composed of the host material with the luminescent center element. An electro-luminescence element is further disclosed, wherein the X-ray diffraction spectrum thereof has only a single peak at an X-ray diffraction angle from the luminescent layer, ranging from 25.degree. to 30.degree. according to a thin film X-ray diffraction measuring method using Cu-Kd radiation, and no other peaks of the X-ray diffraction spectrum exist at an X-ray diffraction angle of approximately 27.degree..

An electroluminescent device comprises an insulating substrate having thereon a pair of electrodes comprising a transparent first electrode and a transparent second electrode, with a stack of transparent first insulating layer, a luminescent layer, and a second transparent layer interposed therebetween; provided that a light reflecting plane is formed on the outside of one of the electrode pairs with a transparent insulating substance interposed between, the electrode being disposed opposed to the light outcoupling direction.
