It is an object of the present invention to provide a plasma display apparatus in which reliable erase discharge is performed and an erroneous discharge is suppressed, even when a discharge sustain period is shortened so as to realize a PDP having high definition. The above object is achieved in the following manner. In the discharge sustain period, a pulse applied in the later part of the discharge sustain period has a larger pulse width than a pulse applied in the earlier part of the discharge period, except for an initial pulse in the discharge sustain period. In addition, a called narrow pulse is applied in an erase period to perform an erase discharge. According to this method, wall voltages in discharge cells at the end of the discharge sustain period are raised to a higher level than in the related art. As a result, reliable erase discharge is performed, and an erroneous discharge is suppressed.

Plasma display apparatus

A plasma display panel with a drive circuit that divides a field into a plurality of sub-fields with each sub-field including a write period, a discharge sustain period and an erase period. In the discharge sustain period at least one of a plurality of pulses applied in a later part of the discharge sustain period has a larger pulse width than a pulse applied in an earlier part of the discharge sustain period and in the erase period, a narrow pulse is applied to a pair of electrodes extending across each of a plurality of discharge cells. The narrow pulse has a pulse height lower than a discharge firing voltage of the plurality of discharge cells and a smaller pulse width than the pulses applied in the discharge sustain period.

Plasma display

When applying sustain pulses to each discharge cell in a gas discharge panel, a pulse of the opposite polarity is briefly applied immediately before the leading edge of each sustain pulse. Or, the absolute voltage of each sustain pulse is set higher during a certain period from the leading edge of the sustain pulse than during a period from the lapse of the certain period to the trailing edge of the sustain pulse, and a pulse of the opposite polarity is briefly applied immediately after the trailing edge of the sustain pulse. As a result, discharge delays during a discharge sustain period are suppressed to improve image quality, and reactive currents are reduced to improve luminous efficiency.

Panel display apparatus and method for driving a gas discharge panel

A plasma-display panel of high luminosity and efficiency which does not require auxiliary cells so that the panel structure has high-density cells, enabling longer emission time and smaller reactive power. A driving method of such a PDP comprising a first insulator substrate and a second insulator substrate which is arranged at a given distance above the first insulator substance; the first insulator substrate having a first line electrode group and a second line electrode group which are parallel, and the second insulator substrate having a third line electrode group which are parallel to the first and the second line electrode groups so that the third line electrode group and the first and the second electrode groups appear to form a two-dimensional lattice when viewed from above; thereby forming a discharge space between the first and the second insulator substrates; the first and the third line electrode groups having parts exposed to the discharge space, while the second line electrode group being covered by dielectric layer in the discharge space. The method comprises: writing image information by addressing discharge between the line electrode groups which appear to form a two-dimensional lattice when viewed from above and accumulating charges on the dielectric layer; and floating the charges in the discharge space by applying an auxiliary pulse voltage below discharge voltage to the second electrode group, and generating direct current discharge by applying a sustain pulse voltage in-between the first and the third line electrode groups.
