A solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell includes a membrane electrode assembly having an anode, a cathode arranged facing the anode, and a polyelectrolyte membrane arranged between the anode and the cathode, and a pair of separator plates that are arranged facing each other so as to sandwich the membrane electrode assembly, and have an anode side gas channel for supplying a fuel gas to the anode, and a cathode side gas channel for supplying an oxidant gas to the cathode, formed thereon, wherein the catalyst layer of the anode contains at least one electrode catalyst selected from the group consisting of Pt particles and Pt alloy particles, having a particle diameter of from 6 to 10 nm, the catalyst layer of the anode has a thickness of from 1 to 5 &#x3bc;m, Pt volume density in the catalyst layer of the anode is from 1 to 5 g/cm, the catalyst layer of the cathode has a thickness of 10 &#x3bc;m or more, and Pt volume density in the catalyst layer of the cathode is from 0.1 to 0.5 g/cm.

A base for an electrode plate that has an excellent ability to retain an active material and can be manufactured at a low cost, a method for manufacturing the same, and an alkaline storage battery using the same are provided. The method includes (i) forming a slurry containing water, a powder containing nickel, and a hollow particle formed of an organic compound, (ii) applying the slurry to a support made of metal, thereby forming a sheet, and (iii) burning the sheet, thereby forming a porous layer joined to the support by a metallic bond.

A conductive paste having excellent printing properties, which can be used for manufacturing heat-resistant conductors and resistive elements, is described. Such a conductive paste can be obtained by preparing as a binder a polyimide precursor whose weight average degree of polymerization (n) ranges from 5 to 20, and mixing it with a solvent and a conductive powder. The polyimide precursor preferably is included in the range from 50 to 80 weight parts to 100 weight parts of the solvent. A polar solvent, or a mixed solvent including a polar solvent and a nonpolar solvent can be used. A preferable mixed solvent is a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, in which the mixing volume ratio is preferably ranging from 2:8 to 9:1, more preferably, 2:8 to 3:7.

A refrigeration system includes an outdoor unit having a refrigeration compressor and a heat exchanger, and an indoor unit having a heat exchanger to be placed where air conditioning is desired. In installing the refrigeration system, the outdoor unit is first connected with the indoor unit via pipe lines, and an air absorbing device containing zeolite as an adsorbent is subsequently placed on the outdoor unit, the indoor unit, or the pipe lines to remove air. The air absorbing device is then separated from the refrigeration system, and refrigerant is caused to circulate through the refrigeration system.

A hologram recording device, which comprises a recording layer of a polymer composition a photoconductive element, a second-order super-polarization element and an electron or hole capturing material and having a non-centro symmetric structure is disclosed. Transparent electrode layers are provided on each side of the recording layer. The hologram recording device is capable of space light modulation and real time hologram recording. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing the hologram recording device and a method of hologram recording using the device. The hologram recording material is of a polymer composition a photoconductive element, a second-order super-polarization element and an electron or hole capturing element. The polymer composition has a non-centro symmetric structure. The hologram recording device according to the invention comprises a recording layer of a polymer composition including a photoconductive element and a second-order super-polarization element. The polymer composition has a non-centro symmetric structure, and transparent electrodes are provided on each side of the recording layer. It is thus possible to provide a hologram recording element, which is suitable for space light modulation and real time hologram recording and which also serves as a phase conjugate device.

The invention relates to a non-linear optical material comprising a salt of an organic compound with an optically active organic acid, wherein said organic compound has a conjugated .pi. electron system containing both electron donor and acceptor groups and has at least one substituent group represented by the following formulas (1), (2) and (3) which is located outside of said conjugated .pi. electron system. The invention also concerns a method of manufacturing the optical material and an optical converter which uses the non-linear optical material. ##STR1## According to the invention, a second-order non-linear optical material, which is readily capable of crystal growth, permits a large crystal to be readily obtained, and ensures high hardness of the crystal and gives excellent processibility and non-linear optical characteristics.

A laser device including a wavelength converter of internal resonator type comprises a laser diode 20 for excitation, a light emission section 22 as a solid laser medium excited by the laser 20 and a wavelength converter 23 for converting the wavelength of the laser light from the excited solid laser. The solid laser medium of the light emission section 22 comprises a semiconductor crystal of GaAs, AlGaAs or GaAs-AlGaAs. A second harmonic wave light of a fundamental wave of 0.8 .mu.m band can be easily generated by using a solid laser medium such as a GaAs crystal, an AlGaAs crystal or a superlattice crystal thereof.

A laser apparatus includes a semiconductor laser, an optical resonater and a wavelength converter made of a nonlinear optical material. The nonlinear optical material has at least one of aromatic ring and metal ion, and wherein at least one element selected from the group consisting of ion bonding hydrogen, hydrogen bonding hydrogen and hydrogen of water of crystallization is replaced with deuterium.
